"Bengal Plants" (vol ii. 868.) describes various Amarantus, identified by keys based on leaf lamina, nature of awn on bracts, number of stamens & nature of utricle tips. I fail to use the keys described there to identify this Amaranthus, found on roadside yesterday. This is growing side by side with Amaranthus spinosus Linnaeus.
Species : Amaranthus viridis Linn. ?
H & H : roadside herb, about 2 ft, stem prostrate at base, slender than A. spinosus, soft and striate, no spine on nodes; leaf-blade about 5.5 cm long, petiole 5 cm; inflorescence axillary and terminal, terminal inflorescence about 10 cm long
Date : 12/12/12. 1.46 p.m. (The first pic shows two plants in a frame, the right one is A. spinosus)
Place : Hooghly
Yes, ..., this is Amaranthus viridis...the features you listed tally..
I was flipping pages of Bengal Plants to find its Bengali name, found that what was NATI centuries ago is NOTEY now and Amaranthus viridis var. fasciata has a Bengali name, BAN-NATI or TUNTUNI-NATI.

This is a wild stout herb in a dead canal which is also used as a dumping ground in places. The canal remains waterlogged during the monsoon months.
This plant is more robust than the Amaranthus spinosus L., but without spines and i think less hardy.
Species : UNKNOWN
H & H : erect herb, height between 4.5 ft.
Date : 30/1/13
Place : Hooghly
Can be Amaranthus viridis L.
Thank you very much for the ID.

This is a common green amaranthus.. Amaranthus viridis L. from my place.. (Panipat)
Adding more pics of the same...

Another nice upload.
Wondering what we eat (Hirwa Math or Chavlai in Marathi) is this species or A. spinosus?
Not sure; most probably this must be the one.
And now I wonder what would be lal math !
Lal Math.. should be Amaranthus caudatus.

Some interesting info
Myth, legend and poetry
The word amaranth comes from the Greek<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_language>  word amarantos, meaning "unwithering". The word was applied to amaranth because it did not soon fade and so symbolized immortality. "Amarant" is a more correct, albeit archaic form, chiefly used in poetry. The current spelling, amaranth, seems to have come from folk etymology<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folk_etymology> that
assumed the final syllable derived from the Greek word anthos ("flower"), common in botanical names.
Aesop's Fables <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aesop%27s_Fables> (6th century BC) compares the rose to the amaranth to illustrate the difference in fleeting and everlasting beauty:
A Rose and an Amaranth blossomed side by side in a garden, and the Amaranth said to her neighbour,"How I envy you your beauty and your sweet scent! No wonder you are such a universal favourite."But the Rose replied with a shade of sadness in her voice,"Ah, my dear friend, I bloom but for a time:my petals soon wither and fall, and then I die.But your flowers never fade, even if they are cut;for they are everlasting."
Or in story form: An amaranth planted in a garden near a Rose-Tree, thus addressed it: "What a lovely flower is the Rose, a favorite alike with Gods and with men. I envy you your beauty and your perfume." The Rose replied, "I indeed, dear Amaranth, flourish but for a brief season! If no cruel hand pluck me from my stem, yet I must perish by an early doom. But thou art immortal and dost never fade, but bloomest for ever in renewed youth."
Not all amaranth plants are cultivated. Most of the species from *Amaranthus * are summer annual weeds and are commonly referred to as pigweeds.[28]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaranth#cite_note-Bensch-27>
These species have an extended period of germination, rapid growth, and high rates of seed production[28]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaranth#cite_note-Bensch-27> and have been causing problems for farmers since the mid-1990s. This is partially due to the reduction in tillage<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tillage>,
reduction in herbicidal use and the evolution of herbicidal resistance in several species where herbicides have been applied more often.[29]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaranth#cite_note-28> The following 9 species of Amaranthus are considered invasive and noxious weeds in the U.S and Canada: A. albus, A. blitoides, A. hybridus, A. palmeri, A. powellii, A. retroflexus, A. spinosus, A. tuberculatus, and A. viridis.[30] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaranth#cite_note-29>

¿ Amaranthus viridis ?
Dear friends,
Had not come across such extra long (about 1½ ft) inflorescence of Amaranthus; I hope I am not mistaking the genus. Please help validate the ID. Found the plant in an untended area of hotel resort.

I think you are right as per images at

Habitat- Wild,
Is it Amaranthus, Which species?
Digeria muricata. Amaranthaceae
Amaranthus viridis wd my guess with the data provided.
and yes I agree with ...
Not Digera
flower stalk, size of inflorescence etc is all different.
by now its mostly seedpods... it looks to be Amaranthus viridis
do check it out
As per me A.spinosus or other sp. seem not viridis but not sure, need some more info. for conf.
Thanks, ..., for id.
Both Amaranthus viridis and Amaranthus spinosus look similar except for the spines.
I do not see any spines in the images.
So should it not be Amaranthus viridis ?
