Erect or ascending annual herb up to 70 cm tall, mostly glabrous; leaves ovate or rhomboid-ovate, glabrous or slightly hairy, apex emarginate and mucronate; flowers green in slender terminal spikes or panicles, up to 10 cm long, lower flowers often in axillary clusters; perianth segments usually 3, rarely 4-5, lanceolate-oblong, mucronate; stigmas 2-3; utricle exceeding the perianth.
