Request for ID. Road side plant in Coimbatore. Surroundings dr,not near western ghat area. Plant around 1 foot in length. Leaf pale green, with overall silvery-wash appearance. Leaves and other parts of the plant not tomentose (but appears so). No aromatic smell. Flower spike resembles those of amaranthus species. Recently visited desert area of Rajasthan for a study tour organised by Govt of India, studied many plant sp. of desert area. During this tour our guide was Dr G. Singh from AFRI Joodhpur. I photographed this plant on 16-12-09 from Desert National Park area. According to local staff and Dr G. Singh this is Aerva pseudotomentosa. I tried to confirm form net but not found any reference. Any comments from our experts are invited. Leaves up to 9mm broad, spikes 1-2.5 cm long, panicles leafy--If yes then it is your species. The given photo is of Aerva pseudotomentosa commonly known as BUI or BUHI. very common weed in the North Rajasthan. Appears close to images at Aerva javanica

After perusing comparative images at Aerva and further details, I think inflorescence is more closer to images at Aerva sanguinolenta (L.) Blume. Flora of Pakistan says about leaves as below: Leaves broadly to narrowly ellipitic or elliptic-lanceolate or elliptic-ovate, cuneate to attenuate at the base, acute to acuminate at the apex, densely whitish-canescent on both surfaces (rarely green and only thinly hairy), those of the main stem below the inflorescence c. 1.5-18 x 0.8-6 cm, petiole up to 2 cm long; branch and inflorescence leaves gradually reducing. Aerva javanica, no doubt. Here is the link for A. sanguinolenta (this one is wild....I am told it come in red too and is ornamental) Leaves are very different.....long narrow, and abundant soft silky hairs everywhere on plant tells A. javanica apart from all other Aerva /Nothosaerva species.
