Image is not clear but it is seems to be Gymnostachyum febrifugum Benth. var. febrifugum.
It was taken by me some 10 years ag when I started learning plant photography with ordinary Kodak. Probably you are right. it is used in treatment of fevers.  It is Toxic in high doses.

Taken on 18-01-2012 from Pooyamkutty reserve forests, Kerala.
Habitat: Riparian-marshy-evergreen 
Habit: Herb
Aprox Height: 40-50cm
We call it as "Naakkuneettipoovu" (Tongue out flower) in Malayalam
I think this plant is endemic to the Western Ghats
