B - under and over - 2012

Under and Over, Shown in the AC/OC exhibition at Cohn Drennan Contemporary February 18 - March 24, 2012

Under and Over is a series of paintings that examines the layering of symbols in juxtaposition with their reciprocal levels of meaning. Using the Andinkra symbols (charisma and envy), and other rendered marks, the Under and Over pieces concentrate on inserting the representations into layers of pattern, color and texture, often resulting in hidden strata of meaning.  In Overlay, the triple circle symbol of charisma, or chief, is covered by lace (sanctuary) intersected with swirls of winding paths.  The square symbols in Undertone, representing male qualities, are covered by sharp, linear flame-like shapes and highlights, all moving among the winding path marks.  Other paintings from the series incorporate circles and fish scale patterns, overlaid with broken symbols and skewered by textured components, generating a tension between sign and form.
