A - Lost in Translations - 2013

Lost in Translations’ concept is based on cultural symbols that were once used for specific communication within their cultures of origin and now have evolved into artifice, currently recognized only as decorative motifs and patterns. The indigenous origin may be easily referenced by contemporary audiences, but the primary context has been co-opted and thus meaning lost on, or modified by, consumers of the sign.  Origins of meaning may seem to be obscured, buried in a metaphorical archeological site.  As the mark becomes more relevant, the meaning of the symbol continues to descend, allowing the artist to utilize the formal elements of art - shape, form, color, composition, application – to present a system about patterns, patterns based on codes, codes evolved from signifiers, signifiers that represent the symbols of our cultural origins.
