Journey to Australia
The Polish government periodically relaxed it's emigration rules and after two years of effort to obtain passports for foreign travel, Julek Rutkowski packed up his young family and their belongings and the family left Warsaw by train headed for Genoa. There they boarded a migrant ship, the "SS Roma" and after a 6 week journey arrived in Sydney on the 23rd of December 1958.
Julek was an avid photographer and he took a movie of the journey to Australia. The movie was digitized in 2003 by his son Adam. At the insistence of his mother Irena, Adam also maintained a travel diary, which he translated in 2008.
