Reclaiming His Life and Spirit
David Walker doesn’t appear in standard history textbooks and he’s rarely discussed in the classroom. An education and action program called “Reclaiming David Walker” is being organized by The David Walker Memorial Project to help bridge this knowledge gap. This after-school initiative will offer opportunities for six high school students to learn about David Walker and to communicate and celebrate what he means to them through their own artistic creations – like video, hip-hop/spoken word pieces, artwork, blog posts, and skits. These, in turn, can serve as educational resources for numerous other students and teachers, with dissemination through the Internet and social media networks. Interested in knowing more? Please contact Myrna Morales, co-coordinator of the program. She can be reached at: myrna@communitychange.org or (617) 523-0555. |
David Walker On Stage
A new play inspired by David Walker is being developed by Peter Snoad, an award-winning Boston playwright who is also active with The David Walker Memorial Project. Raising David Walker is a contemporary story of a young Black woman’s discovery of Walker and how it changes her life. The play will receive its third staged reading on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the Newark Museum in Newark, NJ in a collaboration with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Details at: www.newarkmuseum.org. The premiere production of Raising David Walker will take place this fall at Hibernian Hall, a multicultural arts center in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston (dates to be announced.) Check out www.petersnoad.com for more details about the play and about Peter’s work. |
