Artist Statement

Our world is hectic and overstimulated.  Much of my work has been considered so as well, and it's intentional - it's an artist's role to record the time they live in.  My work, as with my life, is rooted in Punk Rock.  It is often puposefully blunt and sometimes difficult to look at and process.  Not everything in life should be rosy and simple.

The second role of an artist is to get their work seen, and understood.  This is the more difficult part, which comes with time.  A viewer has to learn how to look at art, and the more honest it is, the newer the ideas (or expression of those ideas) are, the harder it is to understand HOW to look at the art and pull the pieces of it together.  The challenge is there on the other side of the brush too - how do I create that link, that entrance for the viewer to comprehend where I am taking them?

Past Artist Statements

I visually represent the world that we live in by expressing some of the joy, bitterness and pain of being alive at this point in time while hopefully leaving behind something of interest for future generations.  At the same time, we have the choice of being positive or negative, and our choices make the world slightly better or worse.  I choose to create my worlds as I hope our world will become.
We are inundated with so much visual information that I try to show what we cannot see with our eyes, but what we perceive with our hearts and minds - what might be there or hope will be there.
To do this I often assemble images, giving multiple viewpoints or juxtaposing unrelated images thereby causing viewers to pause and reconsider what it is that they really see.  Art viewers are becoming more sophisticated in their ability to translate what they see, so I try to give greater nourishment to my viewers eyes and minds so we can all try to distinguish some sort of message from the jumble of shit laid before us.
When I've died, I want to leave behind me artwork that has a reason to exist, and is not just there for its own sake.

(Structurally and conservationally speaking, I spend a great deal of time on ensuring the longevity of my artwork to the best of my ability, and use the highest quality materials to make my work as long-lasting as possible.  I want my work to last so that any collectors of my work will not suffer from prematurely deteriorating art. At the same time, to be pushing boundaries requires experimentation and sometimes those experiments will fail.  Unfortunately we cannot know with absolute certainty what will pass the test of time and what will fail, but with knowledge we can make more educated guesses.  I have also been going back to some of my older works to assist them in being more archival, mostly through the application of Removable Fine Art Varnishes with Ultra-Violet Light Stabilizers (UVLS) in them to block out the damaging effects of the sun and other light sources. I feel that it is unprofessional to cut corners by using inferior materials, and to knowingly do so is unethical.)

"(Re)Constructing Memories" - Solo exhibition at the UFV Art Gallery - Abbotsford, BC

October 10 - 25, 2013

"Colin Mitchell's work addresses ideas about memory, and re-imagines events in oftentimes impossible ways.  Through this visual reconfiguration, he explores personal, cultural and familial identity, while subverting the status quo and creating a shift towards greater benevolence and social good."
