The EYAL is a great introduction to track and field for all abilities. Each athlete can compete in up to 3 events during the day plus a relay (additional AAA's restrictions apply). These events can be runs (100m up to 1500m and sprint hurdles), jumps (long jump, high jump, pole vault (U15, U17) triple jump (U17)) or throws (javelin, shot put, discus, hammer (U15,U17)), or any combination.
The league also allow for non-scoring athletes in certain events allowing everyone the chance to try something new.
Currently there are 28 clubs in this league, with each fixture against 6 other clubs. Most events have 2 athletes per team, one is the A stream the other the B stream. Each athlete scores points in their stream in their event towards the teams overall score (an athlete can be in different streams or a non-scorer for each event). At the end of the season the top 6 teams go to the main final and the next 6 go to the plate final

Age groups
The competitions above use the AAA's age groups. These ensure that athletes compete against other athletes of a similar age. These age groups are explained below

The exact age rules are often complex to understand as they are based on the age of the athlete on a given day during that season. The cut off dates also differ slightly for different competitions.
The easiest way to determine the age group is based on the athlete's current school year, and the type of event, i.e. "Track and Field" or "Other"
If in doubt please talk to a coach or team manager at the club.

  Track and Field Other
EYAL and other outdoor and indoor track and field Cross country, SportsHall
 U11 School year 5* School year 6
 U13 School years 6 and 7* School years 7 and 8
 U15 School years 8 and 9* School years 9 and 10
 U17 School years 10 and 11* School years 11 and 12

* The track and field season runs from 1st October to 30th September so for track and field fixtures held in September use the previous school year. If in doubt please ask your coach or team manager or refer to the entry forms of the specific event.

Note that in the 53-12 league, all junior athletes run at the same time. At the end of the race the results are split based on the following age groups
U11 boys
U11 girls
U13 boys
U13 girls
U15 and U17 boys - both AAA age groups treated as one
U15 and U17 girls - both AAA age groups treated as one
