Coaches' Bios | Joshua Sanders

Rowing has been a big part of Coach Josh’s life for almost 20 years. Beginning as a coxie at the West Side Rowing Club's (WSRC) womens' team in 1995, Josh trained with the team and soon became an oarsmen.

After entering high school, he continued rowing as a City Honors Centaur from 1997-2001. The location was the same, the equipment was a little older, the programs were much smaller, but the struggles with academic and athletic life were the same. He knows what it is like to be a City Honors student athlete; he knows the high standards of academic and moral pressure to which you are held. Rowing taught young coach Josh the discipline needed for steady work and fundamentals. He rowed at States, Nationals, and the Empire State Games as a WSRC oarsman.

Continuing on at the University at Buffalo and at New College, Oxford VIIIs where he rowed in the torpids and bumps races, Coach Josh fine tuned his rowing knowledge; he learned to be a better rower, a better athlete, and a more disciplined person. He took a hiatus nearing the end of undergrad life, but cherished the lessons he learned and has taken them with him into the rest of his life, especially his other extracurricular pursuits such as Taekwondo, Yoga, and teaching Latin Dancing.
