Goals

Before starting my archival internship, I made some goals with my supervisor to guide the experience. These goals were designed to add to my educational background and prepare me for a future in museums and conservation work. Most of these goals were accomplished during my time processing the large Leonard Andersen collection and by simply spending time in a museum archive. Through my own insight and my tremendous supervisor, I accomplished so much through this experience than can be represented by learning objectives.

Learn proper archive handling and organizational & storage procedures

I handled many archival materials sorting through the Leonard Andersen files. I was gentle with each one of them but was not afraid of damaging them. Instead, I was eager to get them into a safe holding space where they could be safe for the foreseeable future. Many of the papers were badly folded and I learned to leave them that way until we could conduct proper flattening procedures if needed.

Discover the archives' role in the larger museum system

Although I never ventured to the front of the museum's space where the exhibitions are located, I gained a deeper appreciation for the role of archives in general. I got to see how valuable a resource they are to people who come in to do research or learn about their past. I saw interns for the city mapping out houses for historic preservation and authors coming in to get more information on their topic of interest. I also witnessed people providing donations to the collection and saw how pieces of history come together to create an archive.

Understand the rationale for tossing or keeping materials when processing a collection

I tossed many papers when processing the Leonard Andersen collection. The vast number of these were duplicates of papers represented in the collection. The aim of processing the files was to streamline the collection for storage and research, so I removed anything that was not going to be useful in those future situations. It felt good to get some of the volume out of the way. I was surprised how many letters or posters had so many copies!

Determine the overarching goal of archival storage

As I mentioned before, I learned that archives are not just a sitting collection. They are not necessarily something for display. They are active resources for people from near and far who want to learn more than simple museum exhibits can offer. Specifically, this archive delves into the rich Sioux City community: the people, the traditions, the businesses, and the events that shaped the area into what it is today. Archival collections are valuable, reliable, and unmatched windows into the past.

Gain experience with PastPerfect collection inventory software

My supervisor gave me a brief introduction to the widely-used PastPerfect software which they use to manage the object, photo, and archival collections at the Sioux City Museum. It was really interesting to see the sheer volume of entries and all the information that is associated with each item. I think it is wonderful that the archives are so well documented that materials can easily be located and used. The input time is tedious but the practical use of the system makes the extra effort worth it.

Collaborate with other archives staff and volunteers

It was so fun to get to know everyone who contributed their time to the archives as I did. I got to see fellow interns working on their respective projects. I met older volunteers who helped out regularly because they love the place and its purpose. I also became close with the museum staff who are so fun and friendly. It was awesome to see how they each fill different roles but work together as a unit. I learned from each of them in their roles and I look forward to possibly working alongside them in the future.

Build knowledge to use in future museum settings

Working in the archives at the Sioux City Museum made me eager to work in a museum one day. I enjoyed spending time with the people, the collections, and the history. It was a fun and inspiring environment, and I was grateful to see the daily operations. I witnessed how people work there and saw myself in a similar role in the future.
