Sioux City Public Museum

What did my supervisor have to say about my internship?

Lyndi is an exceptional intern. She is self-motivated and has designed much of this archival processing project herself. She is very focused on the work and efficiently organized seventeen linear feet of archives. She independently determined how the collection should be organized based on its composition. She also gave instruction on the further processing of this extensive collection. She was able to get several hours of experience with PastPerfect, and created accurate and detailed entries. Lyndi has been a tremendous asset to the Sioux City Public Museum archives, and one of the most reliable and adaptable interns with whom I have worked.

This summer I worked 90+ hours over ten weeks as an intern at the Sioux City Public Museum. I spent my time in the archives department mainly sorting through files about Leonard C. Andersen, a former Iowa state legislator and businessman from Sioux City. I was tasked with processing the 17-box collection so it would be organized and ready for researchers in the future.

Through my experience, I was able to gain insight into archival collection work. It made me excited for my future career as a conservator because I was able to better understand the need for treatments. I loved working hands-on with the historic materials and learning how museums operate day to day.

The opportunity was a wonderful way to learn the best practices for preserving and filing all these pieces of tangible Iowa history. My time at the Sioux City Public Museum was a great experience to supplement my education and prepare me for my future career in conservation work.
