Preventative Healthcare Schedule for Dogs

1. Vaccination

Puppies must be vaccinated at 2, 3 and 4 months of age and annually thereafter against the following infectious diseases: Distemper Virus, Infectious Hepatitis Virus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza Virus and Leptospirosis.  Annual vaccination against Kennel Cough is recommended for all dogs that spend time at pet shops or in boarding facilities.

2. Rables Vaccination

Hong Kong law states that all dogs above 5 months of age must be given a rabies vaccination and implanted with a microchip.  The vaccination must be repeated every 3 years.

3. Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm prevention is recommended for all dogs in Hong Kong.  The disease when present is potentially fatal and very difficult to treat.  Fortunately heartworm is easily prevented with either monthly oral medication or an annual injection.

4. Intestinal Worming

Intestinal worms that affect dogs include hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and tapeworm.  Puppies require worming every fortnight until 3 months, monthly until 6 months and 3 monthly thereafter for the rest of their adult life.

5. Flea and Tick Treatment

Ticks in Hong Kong carry parasites called ‘Babesla’ and ‘Ehrlichia’.  Dogs that are bitten by ticks carrying the parasites develop a life threatening disease called ‘Tick Fever’.  We strongly recommend monthly treatment against ticks and fleas using veterinary approved products such as Frontline topspot, Advantix topspot and Preventic collars.

6. Desexing

We recommend surgical desexing of dogs at 6 months of age.  Early desexing reduces the risk of mammary cancer, uterine infection, prostate disease, testicular cancer, and unwanted behavior such as urine marking and mounting.
