A. Library Staff Evaluation Process

Cabot Public Library — Evaluation Process

The evaluation process will formally allow for reflection, the setting of goals, and discussion of issues in a safe, predetermined meeting in a yearly timetable.  The evaluation process will happen once a year for all paid Library Staff.  Evaluation forms will be given to Cabot Public Library Staff in January to be filled out by the individual staff.

Library Co-Director

Library Trustees will complete an evaluation for each of the Library Co‑Directors in a January closed executive session.  The evaluation completed by the Trustees must be unanimously agreed upon before the staff member is formally evaluated.  The Co‑Directors will each receive and read their copy of the Trustees’ evaluation.  The Co‑Directors will then be evaluated in individual executive sessions in February. Discussions will then take place regarding specific areas of strength and areas that may need more focus.  The Co‑Directors and the Trustee Chairperson will then sign the individual evaluations.  If any part of the evaluation needs to be changed, it will be done at that time.  The employee’s signature will not denote agreement or disagreement with the appraisal; it is simply their acknowledgement that the evaluation has been completed.  The completed evaluation will then go on file with the secretary of the Cabot Public Library Trustees.

Library Staff

Staff will be evaluated by the Library Co‑Directors during the month of February each year.  Each employee will receive and read a copy of the Co‑Director’s evaluations.  The Co‑Directors will receive and read a copy of the employee’s self-evaluation.  Discussion will then take place regarding specific areas of strength and areas that need more focus.  The staff member and the Library Co‑Directors will then sign the evaluation.  If any part of the evaluation needs to be changed, it will be done at that time.  The employee’s signature will not denote agreement or disagreement with the appraisal; it is simply their acknowledgement that the evaluation has been completed.  The completed evaluation will then go on file.

The formal evaluation is a way to help Cabot Public Library staff focus goals.  It is a time to acknowledge and applaud work well done.  It also provides a supported venue to help staff work on areas that need improvement.  The yearly formal evaluation will not be used as a punitive measure, rather as a guidepost by which Trustees and staff can strengthen what they do together.
