Field Trials Director

Name: Lester Waugh

Role: Field Trials Director

What does your role in the team involve?

The Director is responsible overall for the conduct of the trials. He must ensure that the schedule of experiments and test activities are carried out successfully each day. The schedules are compiled in discussions with the PRoVisG Scientists and Engineers at the beginning of the day. It is the Director's job to ensure that everyone is able to acquire the data they need and to deal with any problems as they arise.

What other projects are you involved with?

Many different projects related to the development of technology for interplanetary rovers, Orbiter and Penetrator missions to Jupiter, Lunar Rover missions and even some Earth Observation missions. Some examples are L-VRAP (Lunar Volatiles Resource Analysis Package), JGO (Jupiter Ganymede Orbiter), a penetrator for the Jupiter Europa Orbiter (JEO), Ultrasonic Drill technology development or Speckle Velocimetry Development (contactless speedometer for rovers).

What interested you in working in the space sector?

I was very interested in the challenges presented by space exploration and exploitation. It's exciting when the things you are involved in designing and building travel across the Solar System gathering science as they go, or monitor the Earth ecosystem to measure things such as global warming. Space is both fun and exciting.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Space?

Study the sciences with interest – they’re really fascinating and you can do many cool things with scientific knowledge including working out how to get to other planets, or launch satellites into orbit around Earth and put rovers on to the Moon for example. It takes time but it's really worth it.
