Gender Parity

I have been involved in feminist political work for most of my adult life.  The rallying cry of "50/50 in 2020" -- 50% women playwrights in professional theatres, by the year 2020 --was initiated by NY women Susan Jonas, Melody Brooks, and Julie Crosby in 2010, following a report that showed only 20% of produced playwrights were female.  In 2012, I joined the public meetings on Diversity/Inclusion/Gender hosted by StageSource, the theatre alliance in Boston (see the link in "Favorite Places").  That led to the formation of its Gender Parity Task Force, and I am a member of the subcommittee on Festivals.

Part of my activist work is to challenge theatres whose "blind" submissions result in 100% male-authored plays; support women playwrights, directors and producers by attending their plays; and to participate in the many online dialogues on gender parity.

I was also interviewed, along with 18 others, by Emma Weisberg of Connecticut College, through a grant from the Mellon Foundation.  You can find the article on Howlround:
