Bikeability - Birmingham City Council

What is bikeability ?

Level 1: Teaches students to control and master a bike.

Audience: Year 3 and 4 students.
Course Format: Up to 15 students per instructor can be trained over a course duration of 2 hours.

Note: Level 1 training available Autumn 2015 (subject to funding).


Combined Level 1 & 2: develops safe cycling skills.

Audience: Year 5, 6 and 7 students.
Course Format:  Level 1 session delivered on the playground with up to 16 students. This is followed by on road training. The ratio is 4 students to 2 instructors over 2 sessions. Each session is 90 minutes. Students must have completed Level 1 to progress onto Level 2.


Level 2 Only: For students who are already able to control a bike to Level 1 standard.

Audience: Year 7, 8 and 9 students.
Course Format: The ratio is 4 students to 2 instructors over 2 sessions or 6 students to 2 instructors over 3 sessions. Each session is 90 minutes.


Level 3 Only: This course deals with all types of road conditions and more complex situations. Students must have completed Level 2 before progressing onto Level 3.

Audience: Year 8 and 9 students.
Course Format: The course is based on 2 sessions with a ratio of 4 students to 2 instructors over 3 hours.
