System Security Mechanism

The concept of Database Administrator (DBA) has been applied to secure the database. A DBA can ensure that the database is accessed only through the proper channels and by authorised users. For this purpose some security rules have been defined and are checked whenever there is an attempt to access the sensitive data. The security rules followed by The RealschuleeXp 2005 are listed subsequently:

User Name and Password

Every user concerned with The RealschuleeXp 2005 owns a User name and a Password. This User Name and Password is asked every time a logon attempt is made. Once the User Name and Password are entered their validity is checked against the records stored in a table in the remote database. Once the validity is confirmed the user is allowed to enter the system, else, the logon attempt is cancelled and the user is asked to try again. If three consecutive attempts become unsuccessful the Logon Screen disappears and the software is closed.

User Levels

The DBA can group users into user levels. Each group of users differ with others in the number of privileges its users have. There exists a hierarchy of user levels in The RealschuleeXp 2005. The topmost level has all the rights on the system. The authority and capacity decreases top to bottom. At the lowest level the users have very limited rights of viewing data from selected tables.

Individual User Existence

A user need not necessarily be grouped, i.e., a user may exist in the database independently and it may have different roles as defined and agreed by the DBA.

A DBA can create or delete individual users according to the need of the hour.

DBA’s authority to modify or delete a user/group

As the DBA has all the responsibility of maintaining the system he can exercise his rights of modifying a user’s account, privileges, and even Password without the prior permission from the user. This stands true for the entire group (user level) also.

Password Encryption

Since the user name and the password are stored on the remote server, they are transmitted only after encryption. This ensures their security.

Password Expiry Period

Every user needs to change his password and user id after a period of 10 days. If the password is not changed within the period of expiry the system becomes inaccessible with the old User Name and Password. This feature is incorporated into the system to keep the user information fresh and up-to-date. Such a locked account can, however, be released only by the permission and intervention of the DBA.

Change/Recover a forget password

If a user accidentally forgets his password, he can retrieve it at his own discretion by answering the Hint Question. In case he does not want to take that route or doesn’t remember even the answer of the Hint Question he can seek help of the DBA. In such a situation a DBA can help him retrieving his account. Also, a user can change his password anytime and for any number of times.
