Keeping in mind the processing power and workload on each machine, the code is tried to be kept as efficient as it could be. Since it is known in advance that the software has to run on Pentium machines so all the codes are compiled and optimized for better performance on the particular machine. However, it does not mean that the software will suffer speed hiccups if run on machines powered by other processors. The optimization process, inbuilt in the Visual Basic Compiler, only insures that the optimized code will be executed in a better way by the Pentium machines than the non - optimized one. Besides, following rules are followed from very beginning while developing the software to ensure better code efficiency:
1. The GUI is tried to be kept simple though convenient and user friendly.
2. Luxurious graphics have been avoided to ensure faster loading of the software and low memory requirements.
3. Stored procedures are used where ever possible.
4. While handling records of the database, they are cached on client side to avoid heavy network traffic and routine server rounds.
5. The efficient RDBMS, SQL SERVER 2000, is used to give better service to the requesting clients.
6. Use of global modules to group universal code segments and functions to reduce code duplication thus ensuring lower memory requirement.
System Testing
Phase wise testing of the system was conducted to test the software against any kind of malfunctioning. The different types of testing which were conducted are listed as follows:
Test Plan
I. Logical Testing
Logical testing was conducted to test every aspect of each form, report and query as soon as it was implemented, using valid, invalid and extreme data. Test data was added to each code module and results compared with the expected results.
II. Functional Testing
Each menu item was tested in turn to ensure that no function had been missed out.
III. System Testing
The whole ranges of tests were conducted to ensure that no errors had been introduced in the system. In system testing, performance and acceptance standards were developed and sub-standard performance or service interruptions that result in system failure were checked. System testing did also check the integration of the various modules along with the testing of the logical and syntactical errors. System testing was conducted in a phase wise manner; the involved phases were as follows:-
1. Program Testing (To test logical and syntactical errors)
2. System Testing (To test system integrity)
3. String Testing (To test the interactivity of the programs)
IV. Recovery Testing
The computer was rebooted while the database was open to insure that data was not lost or corrupted in the event of a power failure. The recovery testing was also aimed at determining the system ability to face an awkward situation like paper jam in the printer.
V. Acceptance Testing
The acceptance test had the objective of selling the user on the validity and reliability of the system. It verified that the system’s procedure operated system specifications and that the integrity of important data was maintained. Performance of an acceptance test was actually the user’s show. User motivation was very important for the successful performance of the system.
