Project 1: Acoustic performance of a class room

Submission deadline: 26th November, 2011.

A single report from A1 and a single report from A2 must be submitted.

Project Status:

Section A1: Report received. Performance: Satisfactory.

Section A2: Report received. Performance: Satisfactory.

Submit the report in PDF form through email. Highlight the data collection methods, hardware and software used, post-processing (data analysis), results, result analysis and conclusions reached from the data.

The contour graphs should be in emf format. All figures and graphs should be clearly labeled. The axis of the graphs should have proper labeling and units.

Contour plotting from measured data using MATLAB:

An example problem is provided describing how MATLAB can be used to draw contour plots from measured tabulated data. The problem description along with data files and MATLAB codes are available for download.

Students are encouraged to learn this technique. They will need similar calculations when describing acoustical characteristics of a room (volume level, noise level, reverberation time etc. can be expressed in similar contour plots using the same technique).

Project 2: Designing an LED strobe light using 555 Timer IC:

3 groups from A1 and 3 groups from A2 must submit this project. No written report of the project is required. Students must submit a video demonstration of their project (video duration : 1 - 2 minutes).

Students must show three applications with their strobe light:

1. Freezing or slowing down water droplets.

2. Freezing a fan with a strobe light and measuring its speed.

3. Increasing visibility through smoke using strobe lights.

Download Modified 555 Astable multivibrator circuit schematic

Note that you need LT Spice IV software to run these schematic files. The free software can be downloaded from the following website:

http://www.linear.com/designtools/software/

The software is very easy to use. Users guide and getting started guide are available on the download page of the software.

Students can find additional information related to 555 Timer IC circuits in the following websites:

Data-sheets of other 555 timer IC models can be downloaded from the internet. Websites like http://www.datasheet4u.net/ provides free data-sheets.

Incredible People:

R. Buckminister Fuller

(1895 – 1983)

“God is a verb, not a noun.”

Hailed as "one of the greatest minds of our times, R. Buckminster Fuller was renowned for his comprehensive perspective on the world's problems. He was famed as an engineer, mathematician and architect. He believed that technology could save the world from itself. He is most famous for the patent of the geodesic dome. The strength of this structure increases as the log of its size. Over 200,000 of such domes have been built for various uses.
