For all non German speakers, this is a quick summary:

Recent developments in artificial intelligence allow the synthetic production of both audio and video signals. It is now possible to fake video footage of any person. Christian Arnold explains, that these developments will have important repercussions. They can spin the discussion about fake news to a whole new level. Videos about politicians can easily be falsified which has very immediate detrimental effects - just think of the ongoing crisis between the US and North Korea. But this new technology will also produce serious indirect externalities for democratic societies. Democracy only works if citizens agree on a shared perception of an un-manipulated reality. Technologies that undermine this consensus pose an important threat.
