2014 Chemagination Contest

Sponsored by North Jersey Section ACS

Imagine you are living 25 years in the future and have been invited to write an article for ChemMatters, a magazine for high school students that focuses on the role of chemistry in everyday life.  The subject of the article:

 “Describe a recent breakthrough or innovation in chemistry (and/or its applications) that has improved the quality of people’s lives today.”

High school students are invited to participate in the 2014 North Jersey Section ACS Chemagination competition. Write an article as if you were living in the year 2039, looking back at innovations that have occurred since 2014. In addition to the article, design a cover for the issue of ChemMatters in which your article will appear. The innovation you write about must fall into one of the following categories:

          *  Alternative Energy Sources         *  Medicine/Healthcare

          *  Environment                              *  New Materials

To view issues of the ACS magazine ChemMatters, visit the national ACS website,, select the Education tab, then High School. You may also view past Chemagination entries from the Princeton Section by clicking here.

Cash awards will be provided for the first place winners in each of the four categories (Alternative Energy Sources, Environment, Medicine/Healthcare, or New Materials) and certificates will be presented to all participants.  The first place winners from the local section contests are eligible to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Chemagination contest, tentatively scheduled for May 17, 2014 at Princeton University, Princeton, NJ.  If they cannot attend for any reason, the second place winners can serve as alternates.

Chemagination is a team competition that allows students to develop their scientific knowledge and also express their creativity. Past particpants have found the experience engaging, rewarding and lots of fun. We look forward to an exciting 2014 competition and hope to see you there!
