Kia ora koutou,
The organising committee of the Gisborne Central 150th Jubilee met last Friday (4th Feb) to discuss the Jubilee planned for April.
Sadly, we made the decision at this meeting to postpone the Jubilee celebrations, most likely until a similar time in 2023. (likely 31 March + 1st April)
There were a number of contributing factors that influenced our decision, most related to Covid and the current Red protocols.
The key thing is that the Jubilee is supposed to be a time where people can mix and mingle and reconnect with friends and colleagues from the past. Under Red rules we’d need to limit numbers and we’d also be wearing masks a fair bit, making reconnecting with others more challenging. The plan to have a welcome that involved students would not be possible with these number restrictions either.
If there were any indications that we’d move to Orange soon, we could plan with more certainty, unfortunately with the numbers of Omicron cases growing in our communities, it is unlikely that the government will make this move anytime soon.
To be fair to those travelling, we had to make a decision now. We hope that with 2 months notice, this allows those who have booked accommodation to cancel without penalty.
If you have paid your deposit, this will be reimbursed to you by the end of February.
It is extremely disappointing for the school and the students, but we believe that under the current settings it is the right decision.
So we plan for 2023, make it bigger and better, and hope some of our overseas past pupils and staff can make it into the country at that time too. We’ll keep your email addresses on file to keep you up to date with plans for 2023.
