History

The Shot Tower Gallery was designed in 1979 by Jack Gibbs, founding administrator of Fort Hayes, and Judith Claire Hagen, founding gallery director, as a part of the Columbus City Schools renovation of the Fort Hayes Civil war 1864 army building (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Hayes) into a School for the Visual Arts. This innovative design was created to be beneficial to students, by providing education about and examples of excellence in the visual arts, and the community artists, by providing much-needed exhibition space at a time when space for local artists at a minimum.
