Hi Parents,
How are you all this weekend? It's a bit chilly but the evenings are getting longer! That's so exciting!
Thanks so much for all the donations to the Easter Seals campaign. Our class raised $123.50 ! Wow! That is so amazing!
Here's a look at our week ahead:
LA--
letter names and letter sounds
sight words ( this week, we've added " la liste blanche" (the white list) ( click link here: sight word lists )
New sound this week- "t muet" (silent t)
reading- looking at books, maintaining our stamina as readers
starting to create our own sentences.... maybe using one of our sentence starters or maybe just using our own words
proper letter formation
MATH--
counting forward to and backward from 100
identifying numbers to 100 out of sequence- this is hard, especially with numbers over 70. If you have some time this week, it would be great to practice this skill (counting in French)
N9 Subtraction facts to 20
HOMEWORK-
Reading --We're back to reading- 2 little homework books
Sight words: We have studied 6 lists so far- la liste rouge, la liste orange, la liste jaune and la liste verte, la liste bleue, la liste violette, la liste rose and la liste blanche. You will also find the lists here: SIGHT WORDS- LISTS
Math: With the 100's chart-- I'm thinking of your child counting 1-100 and 100-1 (in French).
Then maybe you could start from a different point on the number chart... say start at 56 and count forward to 77 and then backwards.
You could also point to random numbers (out of sequence) and ask your child what number it is. If you happen to know the numbers in French, you could also ask your child to make the number ... say 13 (treize) on a white board or a paper.
Addition facts to 20-
***Subtraction facts to 20 (but we're still working on this )
Mix things up and have some fun! 🔢
Letters and sounds: Continue to ask letter name and sound and what action goes along with that letter. 🔤😀
Phonological Awareness- a new sheet with some fun word games
ODDS and ENDS
INDOOR and OUTDOOR CLOTHING-- it can still be chilly outside at recess
Thanks so much for sending along a spair pair of pants and a shirt (and maybe socks too)- we'll keep them hanging on a hook in the coat area or just hanging out in your child's kitbag
And please also send along a spare pair of mittens-
UPCOMING EVENTS
Monday is Day 5
Monday- Phys Ed
Tuesday- Music and Library
Wednesday- Phys Ed (and a visit from Lucie Gallant, the Easter Seals Ambassador)

Hi Parents,
I hope you're all having a great weekend!
There are a few things going on at Glen Stewart this coming week:
Fudgsicles- all students will receive a fudgsical on Thursday. We are fundraising for this year's Easter Seals campaign. We are accepting donations, so please feel free to send along a donation, if you would like. But every child receives a fudgsical- regardless (if you'd rather your child not have a fudgsical, please let me know). So there's a friendly competition among classes happening: the class that raises the most money gets a pizza party! woohoo And 2nd place is an extra recess supervised by Ms Hufnagel and Ms Dunn! woohoo This is soooo exciting! 🎉🥳🤩
We did have our Spring photos taken on Friday. There is a paper with a code to scan for you to preview them- I will put the papers in our pochettes. Great!
And lastly... it's book inventory time here at Glen Stewart. So we're taking a step back both in the classroom and with our "at-home reading program". I am planning on taking inventory of all my books- may I please ask that you send back all the little homework books that may be laying around your place? Thanks so much😀
Here's a look at our week ahead:
LA--

sight words ( this week, we've added " la liste blanche" (the white list) ( click link here: sight word lists )

Hi Parents,
How are you all? I hope you're all having a lovely weekend!
Our speaking more French system is working well. I have lots of little friends who are earning tokens for speaking in French and are exchanging their tokens for stickers. Some friends are holding onto their tokens while continuing to earn more and are waiting until they have enough for a bigger prize. It's all wonderful and I'm very happy with their efforts! 🙂🪅
100s Day of School
We had lots of older friends in class on Friday! Lots of laughs and lots of fun!
PINK shirt day
Wednesday is Pink shirt day and we're all welcome to wear pink in an effort to promote kindness, friendship and inclusiveness.
Chocolate Bingo
Tickets are currently being sold for a Chocolate Bar Bingo, being hosted by Home and School on Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the gym. Tickets are $10 per family and are being purchased through the Hot Lunches platform. Each chocolate bar will get you 1 card for all games played. Each additional chocolate bar you bring will get you an extra card for each game (maximum of up to 3 cards). The winners get chocolate bars to take home to share!

February 11
Hi Parents,
How are you all today? Well, it's certainly much easier getting around this weekend! lol
❄️❄️
I have included the names of our friends in our class in case your child wanted to start Valentine's Day cards. May I please jump in and ask you a favour? If your child is going to pass out Valentine's Day cards, could you please have him/her make enough for every child in the class? We wouldn't want anyone to be left out on Valentine's Day. Thanks so so much! I've included the list at the end of our newsletter. 💕
We have lots to do this week:
LA--
letter names and letter sounds
sight words ( this week, we've added "la liste violette " ( click link here: sight word lists )
I'm doing some reading assessments this week but we're also jumping into the sound "in/ain"
winter clothing vocabulary
reading- looking at books, maintaining our stamina as readers
copying sentences from the board and then attempting to finish them with their own words and then illustrating them
proper letter formation
MATH--
counting forward to and backward from 80
identifying numbers to 80 out of sequence- this is hard, especially with numbers 10-20. If you have some time this week, it would be great to practice this skill (counting in French)
continuing to skip count by 2s (2-20) , by 5s (5-80) and by 10s (10-80)
N9 Addition facts to 20
HOMEWORK- So... let's redo last week's homework....
Please feel free to keep the duo-tang in your child's pochette or you can keep it at home because the duo-tang isn't needed at school. It's an "at-home" duo-tang. I will sending home all homework on Mondays and put all sheets in their pochette. May I ask you for a favour? At home, can you please help your child put the homework sheets inside the pochette? Thanks so much- it takes a lot of time to do that here at school. 🙂 )
Now that we have finished a group of the more complex sounds (é, o ouvert, hard c and hard g, ou, eu, ch and bossy e at end of words), let's try sending home some levelled books. The children have lots of skills- and are able to decode a lot of words. That being said, we haven't covered all complex sounds out there (lol) so don't worry if there are words your child just can't break down into its parts or doesn't know the meaning of. Decoding and learning new vocabulary is a year-long process here in Grade 1.
Reading -- 2 levelled reading books. If needed, please feel free to send them back if they are too hard or too easy and we'll switch them out. Please send them back to school on Fridays so that we can organize things for Mondays. Great!
Syllable worksheet- ch
We're at the point where a lot of the children are able to look at the little syllables and simply say the syllables. That is fantastic and if your child is doing that, we'll keep with that. If your child still wants to tap out the sounds in the syllable, that's just fine too- but we're moving toward looking and saying the syllable, rather than tapping out each sound.
Sight words: We have studied 5 lists so far- la liste rouge, la liste orange, la liste jaune and la liste verte, la liste bleue You will also find the lists here: SIGHT WORDS- LISTS
Math: With the 100's chart, (I sent home a 100s chart a few weeks ago- let me know if you need a new copy). I'm thinking of your child counting 1-60 and 60-1 (in French).
Then maybe you could start from a different point on the number chart... say start at 6 and count forward to 17 and then backwards.
You could also point to random numbers (out of sequence) and ask your child what number it is. If you happen to know the numbers in French, you could also ask your child to make the number ... say 13 (treize) on a white board or a paper.
Feel free to begin looking at 1 more than.... 2 more than... any number to 20. Mix things up and have some fun! 🔢
Letters and sounds: Continue to ask letter name and sound and what action goes along with that letter. 🔤😀
Phonological awareness -- all word activities are in English so have fun! 😀
ODDS and ENDS
Movement class - The class was cancelled last week but we're on for this week.
INDOOR and OUTDOOR CLOTHING
Thanks so much for sending along a spair pair of pants and a shirt (and maybe socks too)- we'll keep them hanging on a hook in the coat area or just hanging out in your child's kitbag
If possible, could you make sure to send along your child's snowpants. We go outside as much as we can and it can be cold outside. ❄️ Thanks !
And please also send along a spare pair of mittens- They often get wet at 1st recess and then your child has to wear them again for 2nd recess. Not the worst thing in the world, I know but it's also not so nice to put on cold, wet mittens. hahaha Thanks! :)
Valentine's Day (17 students) So our little class party is set for this Wednesday- after lunch. We'll pass out our cards in the morning and have a little treat and play in the afternoon. A great way to celebrate Friendship Day.

February 4
Hi Parents,
Happy February! I hope you're all cozy and warm today!
❄️❄️
I thought I would include the names of our friends in our class in case your child wanted to start Valentine's Day cards. May I please jump in and ask you a favour? If your child is going to pass out Valentine's Day cards, could you please have him/her make enough for every child in the class? We wouldn't want anyone to be left out on Valentine's Day. Thanks so so much! I'll include the list at the end of our newsletter. 💕
We have lots to do this week:
LA--
letter names and letter sounds
sight words ( this week, we're looking at "la liste violette " ( click link here: sight word lists )
I'm doing some reading assessments this week but we're also jumping into the sound "on"/"om"
winter clothing vocabulary
reading- looking at books, maintaining our stamina as readers
copying sentences from the board and then attempting to finish them with their own words and then illustrating them
proper letter formation
MATH--
counting forward to and backward from 75
identifying numbers to 75 out of sequence- this is hard, especially with numbers 10-20. If you have some time this week, it would be great to practice this skill (counting in French)
N9 Addition facts to 20
HOMEWORK-
Please feel free to keep the duo-tang in your child's pochette or you can keep it at home because the duo-tang isn't needed at school.
January 28
Hi Parents,
Wow! I really can't believe we are here at the end of January. February is right around the corner. It was great to get a little bit of snow last week- the children had so much fun playing outside, building snow people, rolling and making snow balls. It was wonderful to see them so happy!
We have lots to do this week:
LA--
letter names and letter sounds
sight words ( this week, we're looking at "la liste bleue" ( click link here: sight word lists )
I'm almost finished with my quick assessment of Block 2 complex sounds. Then we'll jump into "silent s" at the end of words- like gros (large), mais (however)
winter clothing vocabulary
reading- looking at books, maintaining our stamina as readers
copying sentences from the board and then attempting to finish them with their own words and then illustrating them
proper letter formation
MATH--
counting forward to and backward from 75

Syllable worksheet- eu (sounds very much like e in je)
Your child sounds out each syllable. We have been tapping each sound with our fingers- 1st sound is tapped with the index finger and then the 2nd sound is tapped with the middle finger. If there is a 3rd sound, we'd use the 3rd finger and so on. Your child doesn't have to use his/her fingers as long as he/she is correctly saying each syllable.

Hi Parents,
Happy weekend! I hope you are all having a relaxing weekend.
We have another great week planned. Here's a little look:
LA--
letter names and letter sounds
sight words ( this week, we're looking at "la liste bleue" ( click link here: sight word lists )
This week, we're taking a quick break from learning new sounds. We have reached the end of Block 2 sounds and will do a little recap and evaluation before jumping into our next group of sounds with Block 3.

reading- looking at books, continuing to build our stamina as readers

N8 outcome- numbers one more than.. 2 more than a given number. We'll use number lines, 100s chart and manipulatives to help us...
Oh- 1 more thing! We have been listening to some songs in class - about the alphabet and numbers and the children wanted me to share those songs with you. If you head to the Extras section of our Google site (the next heading to Newsletter at the top of this page) you'll find the links.

Hi Parents,
How are you? I hope you have all had a lovely weekend.
We have lots to do here in 1H! Let's have a look at what we'll be up to:
LA--
letter names and letter sounds
sight words ( this week, we're looking at "la liste bleue" ( click link here: sight word lists )
This week, we'll look at the e muet - e muet means "silent e". So words that end with an e usually mean that the e is "bossy" and makes the consonant in front of it say it's name (ie- parle so we pronounce the l // petite so we pronounce the t unlike the word petit where the 2nd t is silent). Does that make sense?
winter clothing vocabulary
reading- looking at books, continuing to build our stamina as readers
copying sentences from the board and then attempting to finish them with their own words and then illustrating them
proper letter formation
MATH--
counting forward to and backward from 60

Reading -- Syllable worksheet- au/eau (o fermé) - that just means it sounds like the letter O. However, the letters don't match the sound so it's kind of tricky- but these letter combinations are in so many words that it's very important that we learn them. Great!

Then maybe you could start from a different point on the number chart... say start at 6 and count forward to 17 and then backwards. You could also point to random numbers (out of sequence) and ask your child what number it is. Hi Parents,
Oh! Again the excitement is in the air! Except this time it's all about getting back to school, sharing our stories about our holiday break and being with our friends! Welcome back! And Happy New Year!

Your child sounds out each syllable. We have been tapping each sound with our fingers- 1st sound is tapped with the index finger and then the 2nd sound is tapped with the middle finger. December 18
Hi Parents,
Oh! The excitement is in the air! It's our last week before our holiday break and it's filled with lots of fun activities! And I believe our 2 elves are coming back from the North Pole this week too! Amazing!
So here's a little look at what we're doing this week- it looks like we're sticking to our routine which we are... somewhat. If we throw everything away, we all fall off the rails! hahaha So we'll weave our fun activities into our day, doing some of our normal activities as well as incorporating some fun new ones too!
LA--
letter names and letter sounds
This week, if we have time, we are looking at " eu- these letter combinations come together and say "eu" (like bleu -colour blue in French)
Christmas vocabulary
reading- looking at books, beginning to build our stamina as readers
copying sentences from the board, finishing them and then illustrating them
proper letter formation
MATH--
counting forward to and backward from 50
identifying numbers to 50 out of sequence- this is hard, especially with numbers 10-20. If you have some time this week, it would be great to practice this skill (counting in French)
SS2 outcome which is -- 2D and 3D shapes
Oh- 1 more thing! We have been listening to some songs in class - about the alphabet and numbers and the children wanted me to share those songs with you. If you head to the Extras section of our Google site (the next heading to Newsletter at the top of this page) you'll find the links.
Centres-- things are rolling along really well 🙂
HOMEWORK- no homework this week - However, feel free to review sight words, the little syllable sheets I have sent home and numbers to 50.
Reading -- Syllable worksheet-(you can review the ones already sent home)
Your child sounds out each syllable. We have been tapping each sound with our fingers- 1st sound is tapped with the index finger and then the 2nd sound is tapped with the middle finger. If there is a 3rd sound, we'd use the 3rd finger and so on. Your child doesn't have to use his/her fingers as long as he/she is correctly saying each syllable.
Sight words: We have studied 3 lists so far- la liste rouge, la liste orange and la liste jaune . We're now looking at la liste verte. You will also find the lists here: SIGHT WORDS- LISTS
Math: With the 100's chart, (I sent home a 100s chart a few weeks ago- let me know if you need a new copy). I'm thinking of your child counting 1-40 and 40-1 (in French). Mix things up and have some fun! 🔢
Letters and sounds: Continue to ask letter name and sound and what action goes along with that letter. 🔤😀
Phonological awareness -- no sheet this week
ODDS and ENDS
Thanks so much for sending along a spair pair of pants and a shirt (and maybe socks too)- we'll keep them hanging on a hook in the coat area or just hanging out in your child's kitbag
If possible, could you please send along an extra pair of mittens? They often get wet at 1st recess and then your child has to wear them again for 2nd recess. Not the worst thing in the world, I know but it's also not so nice to put on cold, wet mittens. hahaha Thanks! :)
UPCOMING EVENTS
Christmas countdown. We have some fun activities planned for each day. (I'm sending home a copy but I'll post the activities here too)

December 10
Hi Parents,
I hope you are all having a lovely weekend!
Wasn't the Grade 1 concert wonderful? The children worked so hard on their songs... and did such a fabulous job!
Here's a little look at what we're doing this week:
LA--
letter names and letter sounds
This week, we are looking at " ou"- these letter combinations come together and say "ou" (like boo in English)
SS2 2D and 3D shapes
Oh- 1 more thing! We have been listening to some songs in class - about the alphabet and numbers and the children wanted me to share those songs with you. If you head to the Extras section of our Google site (the next heading to Newsletter at the top of this page) you'll find the links.
Centres-- things are rolling along really well 🙂
HOMEWORK- no homework this week - However, feel free to review sight words, the little syllable sheets I have sent home and numbers to 50.
For the next 2 weeks, we have some fun activities planned for each day. (I'm sending home a copy but I'll post the activities here too)
Here is what's happening this week:
Monday is Day 6
Monday- Music and chrome books (extra computer time)
Tuesday- Phys Ed and Christmas books (if it's okay with you, the children are invited to bring some of their Christmas books (English books are fine) to school to share with their friends.
Wednesday- Music -- picnic lunch- we're going to have lunch in class with our friends...if your child wants to bring in a towel to sit on on the floor... that would be great!
Thursday- Phys Ed-- and Holiday Hat/Hair day
Friday- Music -- and Board games. Your child is invited to bring in a board game to share with his/her friends.
It's going to be an awesome week! Hope you have a great week too!
Paula 🙂

Hi Parents,
How are you all? I hope you are all enjoying your weekend!
LA--
letter names and letter sounds
This week, we are looking at " au/ eau/ ô "- these letter combinations come together and say "o" (like in piano) It's a lot to have all 3 in one week but we'll do the best we can!
Christmas vocabulary
reading- looking at books, beginning to build our stamina as readers
copying sentences from the board, finishing them and then illustrating them
proper letter formation
MATH--
counting forward to and backward from 50

How are you all this weekend?
Here's a little look at what we'll be working on...
LA--
letter names and letter sounds (last week, we worked on"qu, q, h, w and x". We talked about their letter names, their sounds and the actions we make when we say them. We mixed them up and put them into little syllables, using the new letters and some old letters too. We also worked upper and lower case letters.
letters - "y and z" this week
Fall vocabulary
reading- looking at books, beginning to build our stamina as readers
copying sentences from the board and illustrating them
proper letter formation

HOMEWORK-
So, we're taking a different approach this week to homework. I attended an excellent workshop about a week ago that really made me think. We talked a lot about the science of reading and how to best approach reading for our little friends. I would like to pause our at-home reading program (that is, the little books) for a few weeks until the children have been exposed to more of those complex sounds (ou, an, oi and so on). Instead, I'd like to send home some 2 sound syllables- like we practice every day in class. I have photocopied some sounds we have already studied and am sending it home. Feel free to practice these little syllables as often as you and your child would like. Your child is invited to tap out each sound in the syllable if that helps or to simply look at the syllable and say it. Both ways work great.
Sight words: We have studied 2 lists so far- la liste rouge and la liste orange. I am preparing all the lists to send home to you. You will also find the lists here: SIGHT WORDS- LISTS

Continue with the letters of the alphabet- highlighting the letters we've already looked at and that way, the two of you can look at them together. Maybe ask letter name and sound and what action goes along with that letter? Please don't worry if your child can't remember... we're early days yet. 🔤😀
Alphabet letters already studied:
a // b // c dur // d // e// f// g dur// h// i // j // k // l // m // n // o // p // q, qu // r// s// t // u // v // w // x/
Phonological awareness- all activities are in English and are a lot of fun! A friend of mine (who is a Speech and Language Pathologist) told me that we can never be too strong in our maternal language. Phonological awareness skills are a precursor to reading and writing and I will be sending home some activities all year long.
Please feel free to keep the duo-tang in your child's pochette or you can keep it at home because the duo-tang isn't needed at school. It's an "at-home" duo-tang. HOMEWORK-Reading at home (letter)
How did the reading going? Remember, we are still learning the letters of the alphabet 🙂 so it's all at the beginning stages. We are working at decoding words- but we haven't touched any doubles sounds yet (double sounds look like this " ou// an// oi// on// and so on..." and there are a LOT of them and they are everywhere in books! hahaha So please don't worry if your child isn't reading many or any words on the page.
Reading strategies: (Our reading strategies involve animal friends to help us learn our strategies... in case you were wondering)
1) Touche le mot avec la tortue: Touch the first word on the page
2) Prépare ta bouche avec la mouche: Getting ready- look at the first sound in a word and say it.
So, don't worry about the reading of the actual words. Have your child touch the first word on the page. Have your child look for familiar sight words, and have your child touch an unknown word and look at the first sound in the word and try to say the sound.
This is where we are with our reading. We are practising these strategies as well as looking over and trying to recognize our sight words on the list as well as in our books. We are also looking at small syllables using the letters we have already studied and we're having a lot of fun and success. Small steps... we'll get there.... it's a journey and not a race.
Sight words: We have studied 2 lists so far- la liste rouge and la liste orange. I am preparing all the lists to send home to you. You will also find the lists here: SIGHT WORDS- LISTS
With the 100's chart, I'm thinking of your child counting 1-30 and 30-1 (in French). Mix things up and have some fun! 🔢
Continue with the letters of the alphabet- highlighting the letters we've already looked at and that way, the two of you can look at them together. Maybe ask letter name and sound and what action goes along with that letter? Please don't worry if your child can't remember... we're early days yet. 🔤😀
Alphabet letters already studied:
a // b // c dur // d // e// f// g dur// i // j // k // l // m // n // o // p // r// s// t // u // v
Phonological awareness- all activities are in English and are a lot of fun! Halloween-
Tuesday is Halloween! This is such an exciting day at school! 🧙👻 The children love to dress up, have a little costume parade with some other classes and have a little party. If you were interested in bringing in a little treat for our class, we wouldn't say no. hahaha There are 17 friends in the class but 1 friend has a severe allergy to NUTS so it's super important to double check all ingredients (let's cover the basics and say walnut, almond, hazelnut, pecan, cashew and pistachio and of course, peanuts) Costumes: I think the general rule is it's better to use face paint than a mask (but a mask will work but please make sure that the holes around the eyes are large). Please put face paint on at home. And weapons (swords, lasers and so on... ) stay at home. The children can wear their costume to school but please remember that we go outside for recesses and we wouldn't want any costumes to rip or get dirty. The children are also invited to bring their costume and change here at school. Whatever works best for you will work for us here. Our party will likely be in the afternoon- a little snack, a little Halloween show and some time to play. Thanks so much! It's going to be a great day!
** I thought it might be fun to dress cozily in our pjs on Wednesday 🙂 -we might all be a little tired from all the Halloween fun
Monday is Day 4.
Monday- Music
Tuesday- Phys Ed
Wednesday- Music and PYJAMA Day and we're back to our regular Library class (please return your child's library book)
Thursday- Phys Ed
Friday- Music
Have a spookily fabulous week! Happy Halloween! 👻
Paula 🙂

Hi Parents,
How are you all? I hope you are all enjoying your weekend!
Here's a little look at what we'll be working on...
LA--
letter names and letter sounds (last week, we worked on "f/ b / r ". We talked about their letter names, their sounds and the action we make when we say them. We mixed them up and put them into little syllables, using the new letters and some old letters too and we had so much fun) ie: "fa / je / ri / bu / sa / ro" and so on and we worked upper and lower case letters
letters - "g dur (hard g- so g is a hard g with a, o and u) and v" this week
Halloween vocabulary
reading- looking at books, beginning to build our stamina as readers
copying sentences from the board and illustrating them
proper letter formation
MATH--
counting forward to and backward from 30
identifying numbers to 30 out of sequence- this is hard, especially with numbers 10-20. If you have some time this week, it would be great to practice this skill (counting in French)
N4 Representing numbers to 20 in various ways...
Oh- 1 more thing! We have been listening to some songs in class - about the alphabet and numbers and the children wanted me to share those songs with you. If you head to the Extras section of our Google site (the next heading to Newsletter at the top of this page) you'll find the links.
Centres-- things are rolling along really well 🙂
HOMEWORK- We are starting to read at home this week! I am sending home a reading sheet that explains this a bit but I've also included the sheet here- Reading at home (letter)
With the 100's chart, I'm thinking of your child counting 1-20 and 20-1 (in French).
Alphabet letters already studied:
a // b // c dur // d // e// f// i // j // k // l // m // n // o // p // r// s// t // u //
I will sending home all homework on Mondays and put all sheets in their pochette. May I ask you for a favour? At home, can you please help your child put the homework sheets inside the pochette? Thanks so much- it takes a lot of time to do that here at school. 🙂
ODDS and ENDS
Thanks so much for sending along a spair pair of pants and a shirt (and maybe socks too)- we'll keep them hanging on a hook in the coat area or just hanging out in your child's kitbag
UPCOMING EVENTS
Book Fair: We are heading to the Book Fair on Monday afternoon. There is no pressure at all to buy books but some of the proceeds from the sales go to our school. If your child forgets his/her money, send it along the next day and I'll send him/her up to the library at recess.
Monday is Day 6
Monday- Music and Book Fair
Tuesday- Phys Ed
Wednesday- Music
Thursday- Phys Ed
Friday- PD day-- no school for my little friends
Have a wonderful week!
Paula 🙂

October 8
Hi Parents,
Happy Thanksgiving to you all! I hope you are all having a lovely weekend despite the wind and rain today.
Let's have a little look at what we'll be doing this week:
LA--
letter names and letter sounds (last week, we worked on "e //k //c dur (hard C)". We talked about their letter names, their sounds and the action we make when we say them. We mixed them up and put them into little syllables, using the new letters and some old letters too and we had so much fun) ie: "ne // ik // ca // di // ma // no//" and so on and we worked upper and lower case letters
letters - "P, S, J " this week
colours
school vocabulary
reading- looking at books, beginning to build our stamina as readers
copying sentences from the board and illustrating them
MATH--
counting forward to and backward from 30
identifying numbers to 30 out of sequence- this is hard, especially with numbers 10-20. If you have some time this week, it would be great to practice this skill (counting in French)
N3- Counting principles. We'll look at the concept of how many in a group? How we count (by touching each object in the group, maybe moving each object counted away from the others) -- That the last number counted represents the whole amount, that you can move items around in the set but if you don't remove or add any, the number remains the same.
Oh- 1 more thing! We have been listening to some songs in class - about the alphabet and numbers and the children wanted me to share those songs with you. If you head to the Extras section of our Google site (the next heading to Newsletter at the top of this page) you'll find the links.
Centres--
So our transition from free time to centre time went so well 🙂 I'm so happy with how everything is going so far!

October 1
Hi Parents,
How are you today? Welcome to the month of Thanksgiving and Halloween 😀 I hope you are all enjoying this long weekend!
Let's have a little look at what we'll be doing this week:
LA--
letter names and letter sounds (last week, we worked on "a,n, t" and "u,m, d". We talked about their letter names, their sounds and the action we make when we say them. We mixed them up and put them into little syllables and we had so much fun) ie: "na, at, ta, ud, du, ma" and so on and we worked upper and lower case letters
letters - "e,k,c" this week
colours
school vocabulary
reading- looking at books, beginning to build our stamina as readers
copying sentences from the board and illustrating them
MATH--
counting forward to and backward from 20
identifying numbers to 20 out of sequence- this is hard, especially with numbers 10-20. If you have some time this week, it would be great to practice this skill (counting in French)
starting to recognize familiar arrangements of objects to 10 - without counting (like recognizing that the arrangement of 5 dots on a dice is the number 5- without having to count the dots)
creating our own dot arrangements for #s 1-10
Oh- 1 more thing! We have been listening to some songs in class - about the alphabet and numbers and the children wanted me to share those songs with you. If you head to the Extras section of our Google site (the next heading to Newsletter at the top of this page) you'll find the links.
Centres--
We are slowly changing our free centre time to a more routine centre time where the children will rotate through specific centres (2 literacy, 1 math, and time with Mme Paula ). We will continue to also have a free, exploration centre and then on Friday afternoons, we'll have our free centre time for the whole class. I just wanted to let you know because although our centres are fun and most little friends love them, it sometimes hard to let go of the preferred free centres. All my little friends get there in the end but I just wanted you to know in case your child comes home saying he/she didn't get to play in class today- you'll know the back story. 🙂
HOMEWORK
So we're starting homework this week. I'm sending home an alphabet sheet and a phonological awareness sheet. Your child is welcome to colour the alphabet sheet and my thoughts would be for you and your child to highlight the letters we've already looked at and that way, the two of you can look at them together. Maybe ask letter name and sound and what action goes along with that letter? Please don't worry if your child can't remember... we're early days yet. 🔤😀
Your child will have a homework duo-tang. 🙂
