Senior Chief Skirvin

Senior Chief Petty Officer Jerry Skirvin grew up in Central Florida, graduating from Winter Park High School, Winter Park, FL in 1989, Immediately following graduation he went into the U.S. Navy, attending basic training in Great Lakes, IL, with follow-on training in the Machinist's Mate (MM) 'A' School and Advanced Technical Field program. After completing school, he was assigned to the engine room of the USS Saratoga (CV-60), homeported at Naval Station Mayport, FL. During his time on the Saratoga he served in the Gulf War, Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, as well as operations supporting the Liberation of Kuwait.

Senior Chief Skirvin went on to serve on the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), Cryogenic Technician and Leading Petty Officer, and the USS Russell (DDG-59), as the Maintenance and Material Manager (3MC). His shore duty assignments include: Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland, where he served as a Cryogenic Technician; Navy Recruiting District, Raleigh, NC, as a Navy Recruiter out of the Henderson, NC recruiting station; Naval Training Center Great Lakes, IL, as the Technical Training Officer and Basic Engineering Common Core (BECC) Instructor; Naval Hospital Jacksonville and the Navy Branch Health Clinic, Manama, Bahrain, as a Navy Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP) Counselor and Leading Chief Petty Officer.

While in the Navy Senior Chief Skirvin received numerous awards and commendations to include the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), Good Conduct Medal (8 awards), National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service medal (3 awards), Iraq Campaign Medal (2 awards), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, NATO Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medals (Saudi Arabia and Kuwait), Navy Expert Pistol and Rifle Medals. Senior Chief Skirvin has also earned the Navy's Enlisted Surface Warfare and Aviation Warfare Specialist designations.

Senior Chief Skirvin's educational background include the following: Master of Science in Education and a Bachelor's of Science in Workforce Education, Training and Development, from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL, and an Associate in General Studies from Central Texas College in Killeen, TX.

Senior Chief Skirvin retired from the US Navy in September 2015. Immediately starting as a NJROTC Instructor at Winter Park HS, in Winter Park, FL. He taught Naval Science 1-4 and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, dual enrollment, classes including Principles of Aeronautical Science and Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Senior Chief taught at Winter Park HS for 4 years until 2019. Carson High School is Senior Chief's second NJROTC program; he started here in August 2019.
