Homemade Cosmetics

It all started with a Vice Magazine video called Garbage Island. Plastic polymers scattered throughout our ocean. Little bitty fish eating plastic–thinking it's food— and those little bitty fish get eaten by slightly larger fish, and so on and so on until bioaccumulation ends in our bodies, gumming up our systems, causing cancers and hormonal imbalances.

Suddenly, I look around my house and realize plastic is everywhere. Getting rid of plastic bags and water bottles is a drop in the bucket when it comes to the plastic waste that leaves our homes. So on top of eating organic, local, sustainable food, buying USA made, organic cotton clothes, supporting independently owned stores, we have to find all our products without plastic packaging. The measures I must take to continue feeling self-righteous...

One woman has tried to get rid of plastic in her life all together, truly live a plastic-free life, and it looks terribly difficult. I am taking baby steps. I have started buying in bulk at the grocery store, bringing my own glass containers, as well as mesh bags for all my produce.

Now for my cosmetics. It is near impossible to find cosmetics that do not come in plastic bottles, so I have decided to make my own.

Wish me luck....
