Soccer Rules Simplified

Object: The object of the game is to score more goals than your opponent by putting the ball into the opponents net using any part of your body EXCEPT the hands and arms.

Length of Contest: A game consists of two 15-minute periods, with a 2-minute break between the periods. At the end of the game, the team with the most goals wins.

Team Members: A typical team has 7 players:

* 1 goalie

* 2 Defensemen

* 2 Midfielders

* 2 Strikers

(One) GOALIE: Protector of the goal. The goalie can use their hands, feet, or any other part of his/her body to stop shots coming into the net. If a goalie catches the ball, they can kick, punt, or throw to any teammate up the field within their special Penalty Area. A goalie is required to wear a different color jersey than his teammates and opponents.

(Two) DEFENSEMEN: The Defenders of their Goal. These players guard the opponents Strikers and look to clear the ball up-field to their Midfielders and Strikers. They are usually limited to their own Defensive area of the playing field.

(Two) MIDFIELDERS: These players require both Offensive and Defensive Skills while offering support to both Attacking and Defending Areas of the playing field. This position involves the most running and skill.

(Two) STRIKERS: These are the Attacking Offensive players looking to score or set up teammates for scoring opportunities. Usually limited to the offensive area of the playing field

BASIC RULES:

* Play begins with the first team listed taking a “Kick-Off” from the Center Spot. Opponents must be outside the Center Circle and the Kicker may not touch the ball again until it has been touched by a teammate or opponent. Teams will switch to begin the 2nd Half.

*The Goalie has “SPECIAL PRIVILEGES” inside the Penalty Area, however, once they leave the area they are required to play as a regular player.

*All Major Fouls will result in a DIERECT KICK. A goal can be scored directly from the initial kick. If the Defense commits a Major Foul in their own Penalty Area, the attacking team is awarded a Penalty Kick.

*All Minor Fouls will result in an INDIRECT KICK. A goal cannot be scored unless the ball has been touched by ANY player other than the kicker before passing through the goal.

*For both Indirect and Direct Kicks, the ball is placed where the foul or infraction occurred. Defensive players MUST be at least 10 yards from the ball.

*If a Defensive Foul has occurred in the Goal Area, the ball will be moved to the 6 yard line nearest to where the foul occurred and Defenders must stay 10 yards from the ball UNLESS they are on the goal line between the goal posts.

* A Goal Kick restarts the game once the ball passes over the goal line without having scored, and is last touched by an attacking player. This kick can be taken from the top corner of the Goal Area from anyone on the team. No team may touch the ball until it LEAVES the Penalty Area.

* A Corner Kick is used to restart play after the ball has passes over the goal line without having scored and is last touched by your own Defense or Goalkeeper. You CAN score from a Corner Kick as it is placed on the corner arc on the side of the field where the ball exited play. Defenders again must be 10 yards from the ball. If last touched by an attacking player it is a Goal Kick.

* A Throw-In will take place once the ball goes out of bounds on the side line closest to where the ball exited play. The Thrower can be any team member, must have BOTH feet on the ground and behind the line. The throw requires BOTH hands, and is delivered from behind and over the head.

* The Penalty Kick is awarded to the Offensive Team when the Defense commits a Major Foul in their own Penalty Area. Defenders ARE NOT allowed to form a wall and must be outside the Penalty Area. The ball will be placed on the Penalty Spot where only the Goalkeeper and Penalty Kicker will take part.

*Each goal is scored as one point.

*Games ending with the same score are considered a TIE and each team will receive 1 point. A shootout will then take place with each team selecting 3 shooters. After all six shooters have kicked, the team with the most goals will be awarded an additional 1 point.
