Welcome to JCLC, Lynn!

lynn.jpg

JCLC welcomes Lynn Forseth as the new Executive Director.  Lynn comes to JCLC with over 30 years of experience in education ranging from teaching elementary school to her most recent position as Executive Director of Economic and Workforce Development at Madison College - Jefferson and Dodge County.

Lynn began working full time with JCLC in July and quickly got to work leading a remodel of the classrooms at the office.  In her short time with the organization, Lynn has accomplished a great deal including the placement of computers at the Jefferson County Jail for the GED program, strengthening partnerships throughout the county and grant writing.  Lynn has also been working closely with Michelle Erickson of Wisconsin Literacy in effort to improve workplace literacy programs.

Lynn brings much experience and new energy to JCLC as we look forward to the future.  Be sure to check out the Jefferson Daily Union story for more information about our newest addition.  Welcome Lynn!

Recap of JCLC Summer ESL Programs

2014-summer-class.jpg

Volunteer Kris Cameron leads a group of learners in a game on the final

day of our JCLC summer program.

The JCLC summer ESL program was a complete success!  JCLC offered a six-week session of English classes in Jefferson and Lake Mills.  Through collaboration with the Jefferson, Lake Mills and Fort Atkinson school districts we were able to recruit a total of 8 new learners, 3 volunteer tutors and 5 summer child care volunteers.  We are grateful to Jefferson High School, Lake Mills High School and the Rock Lake Activity Center in Lake Mills for the gracious donation of space for our activities.

A total of 10 JCLC tutors and 12 learners participated in the program.  Attendance and energy was high throughout the six week session and learners were engaged in reading, writing, listening speaking activities related to home and family.  A great time was had by all.  Thanks to all that made this project a success!

JCLC Classroom Face-lift

JCLC’s newly freshened classrooms.

Have you seen our classrooms recently?  The JCLC office classrooms went through a major transformation the first week of July.  Staff worked hard to repurpose and refurbish needed items purchased from Prospect Elementary School in Lake Mills.  Staff also rearranged furniture and organized materials, making our space more inviting to the adult learners we serve.  Though we accomplished much in the week we spent cleaning our office, we still have much more to do.  We have future plans to paint, hang more art on the walls and improve available technology in the classrooms.

Tutor training in in September

JCLC is aggressively seeking additional volunteers to be trained this fall.  Once again, our organization is participating in Wisconsin Literacy’s “1200 Tutors in 12 Weeks” campaign this fall.  Our goal is to recruit 15 individuals that are interested in leading small groups and working with others one-on-one to meet their goals of learning English, studying for the GED test and obtaining citizenship.  We have a great need for tutors in Watertown, Waterloo and Lake Mills.  If you know anyone that has an interest in improving the lives of others in our community, please have them contact us to reserve a spot during one of the orientation sessions and the training.  Advanced registration for the orientation and training is required for participation.
