Cyprus 2012

SATURDAY
Had a great morning at Sardunya beach playing in the sand and making mermaids!  The sun has been beautiful today and allowed us to spend most of our last day outside either on the water slides or in the pool.
We are now all packed and waiting for the minibus to take us to the airport.  We have had an absolutely wonderful time......so good we really don't want to leave. Goodbye and thank you Northern Cyprus!
We aim to be back at Gladesmore by 11.45pm tonight - looking forward to seeing you all then

FRIDAY

FRIDAY
This morning we visited Near East College in Nicosia. Again we were welcomed with open arms and invited to spend time with the students enjoying their end of year activities. To mark the end of each academic year before the exams begin, the whole school takes part in an activities day on site. We were able to enjoy a great 'human table football' game and taste some delicious local food from the stalls.

We had great pleasure in meeting The National Education Youth and Sport Minister Mr Kemal Durust, who was able to take time out from a very busy schedule to spend some time with us. In the afternoon we did some last minute shopping in Nicosia before heading back to the hotel for a dip in the pool before dinner!

Can you guess which member of staff was born in the house in the picture below?

THURSDAY

THURSDAY
Today we had a 10am meeting at Genc TV studios.  Word had got out that GCS were on the island and everyone wanted to know how our trip was going.  After a short tour of the studio we were interviewed and several students were given the chance to share their experiences of Northern Cyprus.  The programme went out this evening and the studio have promised to get a copy of the recording to us before we leave!

Never missing an opportunity to perform, the students organised themselves and gave an impromptu rendition of the new Gladesmore song.

In the afternoon we visited the 'Blue House' which was the home of a well known gun smuggler. The eccentricity of the house was both amazing and crazy at the same time. Late afternoon saw us taking a leisurely stroll down by the harbour in  Kyrenia - watching the afternoon sun go down with an ice-cream........lovely!

WEDNESDAY
Today we visited Maafi School in Famagusta, a community school very similar to Gladesmore.  The students were invited into a Year 8 English lesson and very quickly got into the swing of things making new friendships.  Later in the afternoon we spent some time in Famagusta and visited the Salamis Ruins and took a picture by the oldest tree in Cyprus!!!

Very busy day planned for tomorrow......10am meeting at the TV studios......it's a hard life : -)

TUESDAY
Today we took a drive down the coastal road to Karpaz to see a Greek monastery at the eastern most point of the island.  Along the way we were greeted by large herds of goats and the odd wild donkey! We took some great pictures of us by the sea, enjoying the beautiful Cypriot sunshine!!

The students have been given many, many compliments on their fantastic behaviour and respectful and polite attitude.  They really have been a credit to themselves and us.  All is good with everyone here.

MONDAY
A visit to Girne American College meant that we were able to play our first games of basketball and football. All students represented themselves brilliantly with lots of support for each other in both games. We were welcomed with open arms into the College and are hoping that they will come and visit us at Gladesmore in November. In the afternoon we went to the see 'Snow White's Castle' high in the mountains........another great day!
