College Checklist


 
FALL / WINTER
  • Make an appointment with your counselor.
  • Finalize your college list – Make your final list of colleges to which you will apply.  
  • Request letters of recommendation .
  • Update your calendar – Make sure you are organized and have all of your important dates in one location. Having a calendar will keep you organized and on track. Put all of your application deadlines, financial aid deadlines, scholarship deadlines, and other important dates on your calendar and check it regularly. 
  • Standardized Tests - Sign up to take the SAT or the ACT+Writing at least once in early fall. You need to send your scores directly from the testing agency to the colleges to which you are applying. Talk with your guidance counselor if you need a fee waiver. SAT – www.collegeboard.com ACT – www.act.org. Check each college admission requirements to see if they require the SAT Subject Tests – www.sat.collegeboard.com. 
  • Applications – Collect all the necessary application materials from each of your potential colleges. Contact the admissions office if you have any questions about requirements or the specifics of an application. 
  • Early Action/Early Decision – Determine if any of your top choices has the option to apply Early Action.  
  • Submit all of your college applications well before their deadlines. 
  • Follow up – After you submit your application, contact each college to make sure that they have received everything
  • Work closely with your guidance counselor.
  • Keep photocopies as you finish and send your applications and essays.

Employment & Internships 

Tips On Choosing A Major clipart

  • Meet with your counselor.
  • Make an appointment with Mr. Barwin, the MVU Work Based Learning Coordinator, who can help you find an Internship.
  • Schedule a meeting with Kathy Lavoie, Director of Franklin County Internship & Placement Program.
  • Define your career objective, update your resume, and have a teacher or counselor review it with you.
  • Write a cover letter.
  • Request letters of reference.
  • Plan on going with MVU to the Franklin Region Career/Job Expo in March.  The date will be posted in the fall.
  • Explore classes offered at the Community College of Vermont.
