Elementary Music

1st grade will be covering the following curriculum over the course of a year:
 
     Rhythm identification and performance: quarter notes, eighth notes, quarter rests, half-notes, whole notes.
     Dynamics: piano and forte (loud and soft)
     Pitch: high and low (vocal and instrumental)
     Tempo: fast and slow (relationship to music and our world)
     Movement to music (beat and rhythm, fast and slow, high and low, emotion)
     Echo sing, echo clap, copycat (coordination, pitch matching, attention and focus)
     Analyze music (instruments, mood, tempo, dynamics, smooth or choppy)
     Instrument Unit: identify instruments by look and sound, identify instrument families (brass, string, woodwind and percussion)
     Listening lessons: Peter and the Wolf, The Three Bears, Little Cabin in the Wood (figuring out the different instrument in pieces of music, mood, composer's story or intent)
     Nursery Rhymes (beat and rhythm)
     Use of instruments for accompaniment: snare drum, bass drum, bells, temple blocks, maracas, cabasa, finger cymbals, hand drum etc.
     Holiday songs:  Halloween, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day
     Partner activities: dances, clapping exercises
     Body scale, bell scale (use of solfege)
     Bells (learning to play simple songs on the bells)
     Melody (showing melody line with movement)
     Form (patterns, phrases, form of songs)
     Reading musical picture scores
     Expressive movement ( movement to music, instruments, words or stories)
     Dance Unit: Alley Cat, Virginia Reel, Oh Susannah, Macarena, Hokie Pokie etc. 
 
 2nd grade will be covering the following curriculum over the course of a year:
 
     Rhythm identification and performance: quarter notes, eighth notes, quarter rests, half-notes, whole notes (review) dotted half-notes, quarter-eighth-quarter, whole rest, half-rest and sixteenth notes (new rhythms)
     Echo sing and clap (canon clapping, round singing, matching pitch, identifying rhythm patterns)
     Movement to music ( beat, rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo, feeling)
     Instruments with music: accompanying pieces, playing melodies
     Melody and Harmony: playing melodies and adding harmony parts (songs or improvisation)
     Music concepts: D.C. al fine, 1st and 2nd endings, D.S. al Coda,repeat signs, syncopation
     Instrument identification review: Instruments and families
     Dance Unit: Review some dances and add new dances that are more complex than in 1st grade
     Carnival of the Animals Unit: movement, instrument identification, music description, animal identifying
     Music from other cultures: Mexico, Africa, China (mood, instruments, style)
     Bells: scale, reading notes, simple songs and rhythms, simple compositions
     Major and minor: identifying major and minor songs, chords
     Composition: picture scores with dynamics and instruments (students conduct their compostions:
