Hello TTE Families,

I hope you had a fun and relaxing President’s Day holiday weekend.  The focus of our professional development day last Friday was the various components of literacy (decoding, comprehension, fluency, grammar, spelling, writing, speaking, etc.), and how they are taught, practiced, and measured.  We began the process of identifying strengths and gaps, and looking at ways to align instruction.  Our primary teachers also began examining our new Fountus and Pinnell Literacy Assessment system that will replace the current DRA.  The new program aligns with the leveled readers that kindergarten and first grade teachers use for reading instruction and the system we use to level text for guided reading and book clubs.

Yesterday we hosted teachers from Denver Public Schools.  They were here to see PBL in action, and our students and staff did a wonderful job of sharing.  Some of the highlights were:

  • The level of inquiry, questioning, and ability to share thinking that was happening with students at all levels. The DPS teachers have never seen students be able to perform this way in a public school.

  • Students moving freely around the room engaged in different activities while teachers worked with small groups or one on one with a student. They were amazed at the flow, student engagement, and purposeful work.

  • One of the visitors asked a teacher about rubrics. A student overheard the question and took over the conversation. He pulled up the rubric for his current project and went through the different areas and how he uses it to guide him.

  • As they observed 2nd graders sharing their “Minute To Win IT” games they assumed the students had gotten the ideas or plans off the Internet and just put them together. Not the case, as the the students have been hard at work designing and creating the games and writing instructions on how to play them.

  • Watching the 5th Grade Dance rehearsal they commented on the organization, input and ownership by the students and the "grown up" music the kids were dancing to.  Definitely not your typical kid music and dancing.

I am so proud our students and staff.  A comment that Debbie and I heard often from our staff today was along the lines of “Wow, we do great things here at TTE”. Sometimes we need to see things through another’s eyes to appreciate all the wonderful learning, exploring and sharing that make us the school “Where Hearts and Minds Connect”.

Warmly,

Michele Radke, Principal

*REMINDER-NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS MONDAY, MARCH 27

Timber Trail Elementary follows  the DCSD 2016-17 Conventional calendar.  The exception to this is Monday, October 17, 2016 (Monday after fall break) and Monday, March 27 (Monday after spring break)  when TTE students will not attend school due to teacher professional development.  These two dates only pertain to Timber Trail. Other schools in the Rock Canyon feeder will have school on those two days.  Timber Trail has five more minutes in our day to provide for two additional staff development days in the year.  Our B.A.S.E. program will be open those days to provide a childcare option. Again, this change is only for Timber Trail Elementary, not the entire district.
