Happy Veteran’s Day. On behalf of the staff of TTE, I want to give a big ‘thank you’ to all active and retired military personnel who have served our country and protected our freedoms.
At our PLC Day on Tuesday, teachers attended two sessions, choosing from integration and differentiation in literacy, integration and differentiation in math, a tech session on using the SmartBoard, and a tech session on Easy Blog and Flipgrid apps. All staff spent an hour in the MakerSpace working through challenges. Teams then came together in the afternoon to debrief and integrate what they had learned in the morning into PBL units and lessons.
Speaking of the MakerSpace. Wow! It has been so fun and amazing to see the students in the space. Some classes are still in the exploring stage and learning what the space has to offer and the expectations for using it. Other classes have already started using it in conjunction with their current curriculum. Fifth graders have built wind turbines and used the 3D printer to make a model of a dam so students could understand hydro power. First graders have built models of the school’s floor plan to create escape routes for fire drills. Some third grade classes are using the MakerSpace and it’s materials to deepen their understanding of math concepts.
As I watched one fourth grade class explore the room the other day, I noticed that the majority of the students were using the consumable items (cardboard, duct tape, paper, etc.) to build. The Legos, Bristle Blocks, and K’nex were untouched. It made me question if our children have many opportunities to just use their imaginations and create. Could this be due to our busy schedules and dependency on electronics? Thanks for your continued help and support in making Timber Trail the school “Where Hearts and Minds Connect”. Michele Radke, Principal
