Utah State Dear Timber Trail Families, This week I had the honor of being part of a panel that included three district central administration personnel; LeAnn Westfall, Sustainability Manager; Mike Duncan, Energy Manager; and Neil Austin, Electrical Lead for O&M. Our task was to provide feedback to 24 fifth grade groups (six from each class). For the summative assessment for the their PBL unit, "We Can Change the World", each group looked for areas or situations at TTE where resources were being wasted. They then conducted research on the type and amount of waste; electricity, paper towels, lack of recycling, etc. Group members collaborated to come up with a possible solution including the pros, cons, and costs of their solutions. The panel's feedback included questions to think about and the viability of the solution. Presentations were done electronically and included photos, charts, graphics, and videos. The panel and I were impressed by the level of research and the quality of the presentations. In addition, critical thinking, collaboration and communication were certainly evident. We could clearly see how implementing the students' ideas would have an immediate impact at TTE. This is another example of how we are making learning relevant and sustainable for our students through Project Based Learning. Thanks for your continued support. Have a wonderful weekend.
