PTO News

SME PTO is excited to announce the first annual SPRING FLING Event on April 29th from 5:30-7:30 on the grounds of Stone Mountain.

Please join us for a fun FREE night of music, bounce houses, climbing wall, lawn games and video game truck. Food will be available from a variety of food trucks for purchase!  Bring your lawn chairs, picnic blankets and non-alcoholic beverages and enjoy a fun night for the whole family!

*This event is sponsored by the PTO

Class Placements for 2016-2017

During this time of year, we begin planning for the 2016-2017 school year.  An important part of the planning process is determining classroom placements for next year.  This process takes careful thought and consideration to ensure that we make successful classroom assignments.  These assignments are made based on the following specific considerations (not listed in any particular order):

  • Learning style – How does each child learn best? Are they visual, active, auditory?

  • Special academic concerns – Are there characteristics that impact learning?

  • Special behavior concerns – Are there behaviors that impact learning?

  • Balance for new students – Are they placed where they can make friends and learn?

  • Independence and responsibility – How well does each child take responsibility for their work and social relationships?

  • Health concerns – Are there specific health needs that may impact classroom placement?

  • Relationships – Are there peer relationships that will possibly impact classroom placement?

  • Class size and boy-to-girl ratio – Is each class as balanced as possible?

  • Academic needs – Are the academic needs balanced?

All of these considerations are given to every student and weighed carefully based on their individual needs.  Preliminary lists are created and reviewed by all personnel the building – teachers, administration, and our support staff.  Class placements will go out two weeks before schools starts.  We wait until late July primarily because of possible changes in our student population and faculty.

We welcome parent participation in this process.  Parents often have valuable insight that can support our thinking and decisions.  If you choose to provide input for classroom placement, please send an email to Mrs. Franci before April 8th. We do not accept requests for specific teachers, however, we are interested in any information you think may be important including learning styles and social and behavioral issues.  This information is confidential and is only seen by Mr. B and Mrs. Franci. All input will be carefully considered, however decisions will be made after reviewing multiple criteria. As a result, we cannot guarantee your request for a child’s placement.

Whether or not you turn in any information, please be assured that all of the factors listed above will be considered for every child.

Family Service Day

We are so excited for our 2nd Family Service Day on Friday, April 22nd (students do not have school). Please join us in the cafeteria anytime between 9:00-11:00. Parents and children will be working on projects that are helping local and national charities and groups.

The projects will be geared toward children, and all family members are invited. This is not a drop off activity. It is a time for families to work together to show our children the value of helping others.  We look forward to seeing you there!

If you have any questions, please contact Nicole Benak at nbenak@hotmail.com.

Executive Board Nominations

PTO would like to announce the 2016 Nominating Committee for this year’s Executive Board nominations:

Andrea Ruccolo - aruccolo@comcast.net

Sandy Varney - sandy.varney@gmail.com

Sarah Gates - wrangler5231@aol.com

If you would like to run for the Executive Board for the 2016-2017 School Year there is one position open - Co Vice President

Please email any of the above three women and they can give you more details.  Nominations will be announced in our March PTO meeting which is scheduled for Thursday, March 3rd at 8:45 AM. The formal voting will take place in the April meeting. All nominated folks will need to attend both the March and the April meetings.

PTO Committee News

There are many new committee head positions that will be available in the coming school year - please attend the next PTO meeting to learn more about them. Plus, in the months to come we will be sending more information out about those specific lead positions.

One that we would like to get into place now is someone to take over the lead on YEARBOOK for next school year.  We are looking for someone to shadow Lisa Iveslatt (who has been the Head Committee Chair for Yearbook for years and has done a wonderful job) for this school year so we can assure there is a smooth transition going into next school year. Basically you will learn and see what is all involved and have her fill you in on all of the details before it becomes yours to run with.  There is a great committee in place that helps out with different areas of the Yearbook but Lisa is ready to pass the torch on to someone to lead the charge for next year. If you would like more information about this, please email Becky Paquette at becky@paquettepr.com or Lisa Iveslatt at liveslatt@comcast.net

Volunteer of the Month

Congratulations to Shelley Wells for being nominated as Volunteer of the Month for February. Shelley has several volunteer commitments with the PTO. Enjoy your parking spot this month.

Thank You For Keeping a Watchful Eye

Thank you for keeping a watchful eye on your students and younger children after school gets out. Please do not use the hill in front of the building as a play structure. We are worried that students will get hurt and it can be a distraction for students that are working in their classrooms.

PTO News

Date Change! Save the Date: Father/Daughter Mardi Gras Masquerade will be on Friday April, 1st from 6:30-9:00. Mark your calendars. It will be $20.00 per person.

Congratulations to Shelley Wells for being nominated as Volunteer of the Month for February. Shelley has several volunteer commitments with the PTO. Enjoy your parking spot this month.
