About Me

 Sheryl Miess, Art

Education: B.A. from Bethany College, Lindsborg, KS in Elementary Education with endorsements in art and special education. I also earned a Masters Degree in Instruction and Curriculum in 2004.
Teaching Background: This is my sixteenth year at Sand Creek. I taught fourth grade my first year, and then moved to third grade for the next seven years. After staying home for two years with my young daughter, I returned to Sand Creek in 2007 as the art teacher. I'm very excited to be teaching art -- my original career path and first love!
Teaching Approach / Philosophy: I believe that art instruction contributes to a well-rounded education and develops life-long learning skills. I also believe that every student is an artist and can be successful in art. In my art program, I integrate art history, art elements, cultural references, connections to the core academic curriculum, collaboration between students and teachers, and technology. I want my students to be engaged, feel successful, and love coming to art every day.
Other Information: I am a native of Colorado and grew up in Colorado Springs. During my college years, I lived in Lindsborg and Lawrence, KS. Immediately after college, I spent a year as the Director of Equine Education on a horse therapy farm in Lawrence. There I trained horses and taught riding classes to children and adults with physical, mental, and behavioral disabilities. When I returned to Colorado, I was hired at Sand Creek and have been here ever since!
Outside of school, I love to spend time with my nine-year-old daughter, Taylor, our pets "Leo Dog" and "Junior & Tebow Kitties", and the rest of my family and friends. I am a huge Denver Broncos fan and love going to games. I also enjoy movies, reading books, and traveling. My hobbies include photography, painting, crocheting and knitting.
