Welcome Letter 2018

Here is a shout out to all of my new fifth graders.... WELCOME! WELCOME! WELCOME!  I am so excited for the new year, and am looking forward to meeting each and every one of you.  I hope you have had a fantastic summer and are ready for a fabulous fifth grade year!

We will be learning all kinds of new things beginning with a really active explorer unit- you'll be learning together with a 'crew' traveling to the New World.  Later, you will travel through American History from the Colonization of our country through the Revolutionary War  as well as learn about our country's states and regions.  In Science, you will learn about Life Processes (animal and plant), Body Systems, Mixtures and Solutions, and Earth Science (sustainability and renewable/nonrenewable energy sources)  Get ready to learn like crazy!

For Math, you'll be taking a pretest so we can base your learning on what you know and need to learn.  If you'd like to review before the pretest, there are links on our website for you to review some math skills. We'll be reading and writing in many different genres such as  adventure fiction, historical fiction, mysteries, nonfiction articles and poetry too!

Besides these subjects, there will be many other events that make Fifth Grade a year to remember!  Young Ameritowne is one field trip kids always love.  Now, don't be fooled!  I have  high expectations for my Fifth Graders, and I know that you will meet your full potential.  Yes, you will have homework.  Yes, you will work hard in class.  And, yes, you'll be amazed at all the fun you have along the way. I love to watch how much you all grow from August to May!

Just like last year, as part of our school’s initiative to promote healthy living, we will not be having students bring in birthday treats. Birthdays will be announced and students will go to the office for a birthday picture and prize.

Supply drop-off and the chance to meet the teacher is on Tuesday, August 7th- check the school website for the time. Following the drop-off is the PTO picnic. Our first day of school is Thursday, August 9th. When you come to school on the first day, bring a book that is at your 'just-right' level to read- you'll always want to have a book handy.  Also bring a snack and water bottle and be ready to have lots of fun learning!!!

Our classroom  website will be updated each week and have helpful information, so please get in the habit of checking it each week with your family. The best way to contact me is via email at:

I can't wait to meet you.
