Welcome Letter

Welcome to Fifth Grade!  I am so excited to get to be your teacher this year!  If you're new to Sand Creek, you are going to love it!  Sand Creek is a great school.  I believe our year together will be filled with new learnings, some challenges, good times and lots of laughs.  You will learn some things that might be difficult for you, might be amazing to you, and might intrigue you and spur you to learn more about a topic that you've never thought about before.

This year, we will have a Supply Drop-Off/Meet-the-Teacher day on Tuesday, August 8, between 4:00-6:00 pm. This will provide you the opportunity to meet me, find your cubbies, and drop off supplies. Back to School Night for your parents will be in August, but we don't have a date for that yet. Keep an eye on the school calendar for this event.

This year we are going to start the year off by learning about World Explorers and engineering concepts.  Later, we will explore solutes/solvents in the mixtures and solutions unit, and travel around the country with States and Regions.  In Science class, we will learn about life processes by exploring plants and animals and the human body.  In American History you will travel through time from the colonization of our country through the Revolutionary War.   You will go to Mrs. Bound for History and Civics classes, to read a historical fiction novel and write an opinion essay. You will join Ms. TenBarge for Earth Science, learning about renewable and nonrenewable energy.  You will learn to read nonfiction text with her and write a nonfiction report.  You will stay with me for  the Life Science and Physics units. We will read mysteries and write stories.    That makes 5th Grade fun; lots of variety!

We give an important Math test the first week of school to help us place you in the best Math Class.  Based on your results, and other test data, you will be with either Ms. Bound, Ms. TenBarge or myself for Math. Take some time this summer to continue to review your math skills so you will be ready for this test.  Here are some resources to help you:

Our classroom is upstairs.  You will line up on the ramp in the back of the building.  The bell rings at 9:05 and that is the time you come in and hang up your backpack and coat.  The second bell rings at 9:10; this is when we take attendance and lunch count and we start the day.  Our daily schedule looks something like this:

Our daily schedule has not been set yet.  When we know when Specials and Lunch are, we will be able to determine this.

9:10 - 9:30  Class Meeting

9:30 - 11:35

11:35 - 12:15

12:15 - 12:50

12:50 - 1:30

1:40 - 3:50

4:00 Dismissal

You will be dismissed through the same doors you came in.  You will exit down the outside ramp to get to your bus, to walk home or to walk around outside to the car loop.  Nobody is allowed to exit through the front doors of the school.  If you meet friends, siblings or parents, please make your plans before you get to school.  Parents need to check your planners every night to see what your homework is and make sure it is getting done.

Following is our supply list.  Having adequate supplies will make your days less stressful and help you to be more successful.  Pleas have everything labeled with your name in permanent marker before you arrive on the first day.  Thank you.
