Literacy

We refer to the basic Reading Strategies to strengthen comprehension skills.  We will be exploring each of the Writing genres through out the year: personal describe, factual describe, personal explain, factual explain, personal opinion, and informative.  Everyday we write for a specific purpose.

Our balanced Reading program includes individual novels, Science/Social Studies articles, and the McGraw Hill Treasures program.  Through our comprehensive Treasures series implemented school wide, the students receive word study, fluency, comprehension, spelling, and grammar instruction.

or go to Sand Creek Symbalo under Student Links and click on Treasures.

At Sand Creek we follow the Every Child A Writer program for instruction through out the building.  We also weave other appropriate Writing genres where appropriate.  Students are instructed daily in writing across the content areas as well to write for a specific purpose.  In our third grade classroom, we spend time applying writing skills to our Science and Social Studies units while writing in our specific notebooks. This is yet another way for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills across the disciplines.

Social Studies / Science

In Social Studies we will cover history, geography, economics, and civics.

In Science we will cover life (life cycles), physical (matter) and earth (rocks and minerals).
