Meet Mr. Holtvluwer

To the Mammoth Heights Elementary Community,

I am so excited to begin my second year as the principal of MHE!

If you are not exactly sure how to say my last name - think “HOLT” and

“VELOUR” (like the fabric) and you’ve got it! But most people call me “Mr. H.” and that is totally fine with me.

I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan and attended Hope College (Holland, MI) where I played football, met my wife, and originally graduated with a Communication degree. I worked at the local newspaper straight out of college called The Holland Sentinel before joining the news production team at the NBC station in Grand Rapids. While at WOOD-TV, I decided to follow my dream of becoming a teacher and went back to Hope College to earn my teaching certificate. With teaching jobs few and far between in the West Michigan area, my wife, Jenni, and I sold our house in Michigan and moved to Tampa, Florida where I accepted a 3rd Grade teaching position at Mary Bryant Elementary. I taught at Bryant Elementary for over 6 years in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade classrooms. Mammoth Heights and Bryant Elementary have many of the same characteristics that make them great schools! While teaching, I earned my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of South Florida. Soon after earning my Master’s degree, I moved within the District to Citrus Park Elementary where I served as the Assistant Principal for three years. From there, I accepted the Principal position at Woodside Elementary back in my hometown area of Holland, Michigan where I served as the building principal for three years.

This school year, my son Luke (5) will begin Kindergarten here at MHE! My wife and I are also the proud parents of Ava (3), and Chase (1).

Yours In Learning, Nick Holtvluwer
