Family Vacations Asking for Work
If you plan a vacation during the school year, I will gather the missed materials while your student is absent and send them home and/or work with the student upon his/her return. I do not send work home prior to a vacation for many reasons.
Both our reading and math programs are process not product based so your child will need instruction to get caught-up. It's not as simple as sending home a couple worksheets.
If I send home work prior to the vacation, it is typically not exactly what we end-up covering in class. If I wait, it will be exactly what we covered, not a prediction.
Our reading series is two years old and our math program is just one year old so the curriculum is still rather new for me and would be difficult to predict an extended sequence of lessons.
I do my planning on the weekend prior to teaching it so it is not pre-planned and available to send home prior to that.
And, let's be real, you don't want to do school work on vacation!
I completely understand why a family would choose to schedule a vacation when most other kids are in school, but please understand that the best, most-detailed instruction will be given in class during the regularly scheduled lesson. If your child takes a vacation, there is a chance that he/she could fall behind as I won't have an equal amount of make-up time to offer your child upon returning.
