AR - Accelerated Reader
Details about the AR Program for Parents:
Students have a required point goal for each quarter in 2nd grade. (see below)
They are responsible for finding their books, reading them, and then taking the AR test for them.
Mrs. Ferguson doesn't select and send home books. It is the students' responsibility. Students may read and test on books from Munson Library, our classroom library, the public library, books from book stores, or books from your own home library.
Most books have AR tests. You can always check to see if a book is AR by using Home Connect site. (see below) This site also allows parents to stay informed about their child's progress in AR.
Every night there is assigned homework which includes 20 minutes of reading. Students should use that time to read their AR book. When they finish their AR book, they should come to school and take the AR test.
Students do best when they read one book at a time. They should sign-out a book, read it at home and at school until it is finished, and then take the AR test. Then, they should select a new book and begin the process again.
There is time set-aside every single morning for AR tests. (Don't let your child convince you otherwise!)
I send home a weekly cumulative sheet on Fridays to keep parents apprised of their child's progression towards the quarter goal. Reluctant readers need steady encouragement at home to make sure they are progressing towards each quarter's goal. Please use the weekly cumulative sheet to hold your child accountable.
We talk about AR and the process to select and sign-out books and how/when to take AR tests every single day in class. The students know the process.
