Beavertail Cactus

Beavertail Cacti live in the Sonoran Desert also. Flowers grow on them! They love to live in dry, rocky, desert flats or slopes. They usually live in Southeastern California to Southwestern Utah. They get up two feet in height and they pads are flat, oval shaped, and grayish green. Along with flowers, Fruit also grow on them. These cacti don’t have any leaf’s or large spines. They use water and sun to grow. A fun fact about them is that they are called the Beavertail Cactus because their pads are shaped like beaver tails! 













WHO AM I?

I am a cactus. I am vegetation in the Sonoran Desert. My name is called the Beavertail Cactus. But, I am not like any ordinary cactus because flowers grow on me!


WHERE DO I LIVE?

I live in dry, rocky, desert flats or slopes. I usually live in Southeastern California to Southwestern Utah. I also live in Western Arizona; south to Sonora.


WHAT DO I EAT?

I don’t eat because I am a plant so I soak up the sun and water and that helps me grow! Photosynthesis is what makes me grow!


HOW DO I LOOK?

I grow up to two feet in height and my pads are flat. My pads are oval, grayish green and can be a foot in length. In March through June, pink flowers grow off of my pads and al
so an oval fruit that are egg-shaped and are grayish brown and have many seeds. The flowers that are on me often cover me which makes me a popular ornamental in hot, dry climates. I don’t have any leaf's or large spines.


HOW DO I REPRODUCE?

Our flowers that grow on us have male and female parts. The male part is pollen and it fertilizes an egg part in the female which causes us to reproduce.

My name is the Beavertail Cactus because my pads on me look like beaver tails!

Draw a picture of a Pinacate Beetle as best you can from what you have learned about what it looks like!

For First and Second graders, try this activity to show what you have learned about the Pinacate Beetle!

Draw a picture of a Pinacate Beetle and label it. Draw what it looks like and where it would live. Also, draw what it eats and label all of these.

For Third graders, try this activity to show what you have learned about the Pinacate Beetle!

Make a PowerPoint of what the Pinacate Beetle looks like, where it lives, what it eats, how it reproduces, and a fun fact about it! Add pictures in too!
