INTRODUCTION

Desert is Chuckwalla Lizard home. He is usually 16 inches long and he lives for about 12 years.  He is found across southwestern Arizona. He lives at elevation ranging from near sea level along the Colorado River to about 6,000 feet. He is herbivore meaning he likes to eat plants like wildflowers and leaves of creosote. He obtains all the water from the plants he eats. He never drinks, even when water is readily available. He has flat and wide loose folds of skin on the neck and sides of the body. Males have bright carrot orange tails. Young are pale gray with distinct black cross bands on the body and tail. The head is flattened and broad. The tail is blunt on the end and broad at the base. Mating takes place in spring and a clutch of up to 16 eggs is laid in summer. Fun fact about him is he typically escapes into rock cracks. If a predator attempts to pull him out he uses rough skin and strong claws to wedge tightly into the cracks. He sometime inflates with air to have more pressure against the rock.

WHO AM I?
I am a Chuckwalla Lizard. Desert is my home where I have few resources in the desert resources. I sustain a meager lifestyle and still do very well here. You will notice the bright colors on the male Chuckwalla. I got my name Chuckwalla from the Shoshone word "tcaxxwal" or "caxwal," the form used by the Cahuilla Indians of southeastern California and originally written in Spanish as "chacahuala." I am usually 16 inches long and I live for about 12 years.

WHERE DO I LIVE?

I am found across southwestern Arizona, along the state’s western border, and up through the Grand Canyon into Glen Canyon. I live at elevations ranging from near sea level along the Colorado River to about 6,000 feet. I am found in areas with large rocks and boulder piles and less frequently found on flats.  I am active from mid-spring to mid-summer and occasionally in fall.

WHAT DO I EAT?

I am an herbivore meaning I like to eat plants like wildflowers and leaves of creosote. I obtain all the water from the plants I eat. I never drink, even when water is readily available.

HOW DO I LOOK?

My size is almost 16 inches long from snout to vent. I have flat and wide loose folds of skin on the neck and sides of the body. Males on South Mountain in Phoenix have bright "carrot orange" tails. Across most of its range in Arizona large males have orange-red torsos. Large males from Glen Canyon in north central Arizona have pale ash gray torsos. Young are pale gray with distinct black cross bands on the body and tail. The head is flattened and broad. The tail is blunt on the end and broad at the base.

HOW DO I REPRODUCE?

Mating takes place in spring and a clutch of up to 16 eggs is laid in summer. I bury my eggs in a nest excavated from moist soil.

FUN FACT ABOUT ME?

I typically escape into a rock crevice. If a predator attempts to pull me out, I will use my rough skin and strong claws to wedge tightly into the crevice. I sometimes inflate with air to further increase my pressure against the rock.
