Today you will be learning about a Bumble Bee. A bumble bee is an insect that makes a buzzing noise when it flies. Also if a Bumble Bee feels like it is in danger it may be able to sting you. Bumble Bees can be found in the Sonoran Desert, but they are mostly found in northern temperature regions. They live in what is known as a hive or a colony. Bees eat pollen and drink nectar. The nectar gives them energy they need to fly. The Bumble Bee is fairly large and hairy. They are mostly black and yellow in color. Queen bees and worker bees have stingers. Only a queen bee can lay eggs. A male will mate with the queen bee and then he will die. The queen bee will then lay batches of four to sixteen eggs. Bees produce honey to feed their young and so they have something to eat during the winter. Now, lets get started!
I am an insect. I am referred to as a bumblebee. I make a buzzing noise. I might sting you if you bother me.
WHERE DO I LIVE?
I am mostly found in northern temperature regions. I can be found in the southern temperature regions as well. I live in a colony or a hive. WHAT DO I EAT?
I eat pollen and drink nectar. I do not eat anything else, so flowers are necessary for my feeding. Without the energy in the nectar, I would not be able to fly.
I am large and hairy. Most of my kind are black and yellow. If I am a queen or worker bee I have a stinger. I also have wings and an antenna.
HOW DO I REPRODUCE?
A male will mate with a queen bee and then die. The queen bee will lay eggs in batches of four to sixteen. They are laid on a ball of pollen and then covered with wax for protection. My eggs hatch in four days. FUN FACT ABOUT ME! I make honey to feed my young and so I have something to eat during the winter. I see all colors except red. This and my sense of smell help me find the flowers I need to collect pollen. ACTIVITIES!
