Introduction (video)
Hello there. Today we are going to learn about the Cicada. When the Cicada is born it is called a Nymph. The Nymph digs itself underground and stays there for most of its life, to survive it eats tree sap. When it is ready to come above ground it is no longer a Nymph it is now an adult Cicada. The Cicada is still a small crawler, about the size of a paperclip, it has clear wings and a broad head. It comes from a bug group called the Cloud or Plague family. The Cicada is known for its buzzing and clicking noises. Cicadas do not eat meat , only plants which means they are Herbivores. Well that's all the time we have for this lesson. See you next time!

WHO AM I?

I am in the Cloud or Plague bug group and I can live up to 17 years. I am best known for my buzzing and clicking noise.I make different sounds that are used to express warning or to attract males, but to humans my sound always sounds the same.

WHERE DO I LIVE?

I can be found in the lower elevations of Arizona and other parts of the Sonoran Desert. If I am found in cities,  it will be during the mid summer months.

WHAT DO I EAT?  I am a herbivore, which means I do not eat meat. As a nymph I live underground and feed off of tree                                                                   sap and shrub roots. As I grow older, I mostly eat watery sap.

HOW DO I LOOK?

Length wise, I am about the size of a paperclip. My wings are clear and are held by my stout body. I have a broad head and big red compound eyes.

HOW DO I REPRODUCE?

To reproduce, I will lay eggs. After the eggs, hatch the Nymphs will dig themselves into the ground for several early life stages. It takes several years for the Nymph to resurface. When it comes back above the ground it is no longer a Nymph, it is now an adult.

FUN FACT ABOUT ME?

If I am a male, I can produce a loud, noisy call that can be heard up to a mile away.
