Pinacate Beetle

YouTube Video

The last thing I am going to talk about is the Pinacate Beetle. It is black and has an oval shaped body. Their heads are prominent and narrow between their eyes and they have six legs. They like to live west of the Mississippi in scrubs, dunes, mountains, or under logs. They eat very small insects and they reproduce by the female releasing pheromones to attract the males. A cool fact about them is that they are also called “stink bugs” because they have a very strong and unpleasant odor they release when they get nervous.

WHO AM I?

I am a bug. A beetle to be more specific! People call me thePinacate Beetle.

WHERE DO I LIVE?

I like to live west of the Mississippi in scrubs, dunes, or mountains. I also love living under logs. About 120 species of me are found in the western United States. I even live on islands off the coast of California.

WHAT DO I EAT?

I eat plant matter and soil particles. I will also sometimes eat very small insects.

HOW DO I LOOK?

My body is shaped like an oval. I am all black but sometimes I might be dark brown. I am about 0.4 to 1.4 inches long. I can sometimes be smooth or rough. My head is prominent and narrow be

tween my eyes. I have six legs and I sometimes may have small hairs on me.

HOW DO I REPRODUCE?

Female beetles release pheromones to attract the males. Males then go over and stay on the females backs for a while to show ownership of that female. Then they mate and females lay many eggs at once.

FUN FACT ABOUT ME!

I am often called a “stink bug” because of my very strong and unpleasant odor that I release when I get nervous. I also get called a “clown beetle."
