Lesson Plan Title: Vegetation and Wildlife of the Sonoran Desert.

Concept / Topic To Teach: What plants and animals live in the Sonoran Desert, for the activities and assessment focusing on the
Pronghorn Antelope and the Desert Ironwood.

General Goal(s): Students will get a good understanding of the wildlife that live in the Sonoran Desert as well as the vegetation.

Specific Objectives:Students will identify different wildlife and vegetation of the Sonoran Desert while focusing on the Pronghorn Antelope and Desert Ironwood. They will write a short story using key vocabulary based on the wildlife and/or the vegetation.

Required Materials: Computer, Internet access, pencil.

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): At home go on a nature walk with your parents. Then draw a picture of some of the wildlife and vegetation you saw during your nature walk. Be ready to discuss it with your classmates.

Step-By-Step Procedures:
1) Go on a nature walk with your parents.
2) Draw a picture of some of the wildlife and vegetation you saw.
3)Visit the Sonoran Desert Explorer website and look through the wildlife and vegetation, focusing on the Sonoran Pronghorn Antelope and the Desert Ironwood.
4) Discuss with your classmates if you saw any similar wildlife or vegetation on your nature walk.
5) Look through at least 3 other websites that go into detail about some of the vegetation and wildlife.
6) Do the activity on the Sonoran Desert Explorer website for the Pronghorn Antelope and Desert Ironwood.
7) Share your short stories with your group.
 8) Take the Pronghorn Antelope and Desert Ironwood assessments.
9) Reflect on what you found most interesting about the Sonoran Desert.
10) Share your experience, favorite part of the lesson and what you found most interesting about the Sonoran Desert with your group.

Plan For Independent Practice: Students will do a wordsearch and wite a short story on the Pronghorn Antelope and the Desert Ironwood. After they have finished the activity they will take the assessment on each of the subpages. Then students will reflect on what they found most interesting about the Sonoran Desert.

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Students will share their observations from their backyard as well as what they found most interesting about the wildlife and vegetation of the Sonoran Desert.

Assessment Based On Objectives: The assessment will be the quiz provided on the Sonoran Desert Explorer website on the Pronghorn Antelope and the Desert Ironwood.

Adaptations (For Students With Learning Disabilities): Students with learning disabilities will be able to draw a picture of a vegetation or wildlife and tell a story to a buddy in the room.

Extensions (For Gifted Students): Gifted students can draw a picture and write a short story about any vegetation and wildlife they choose that lives in the Sonoran Desert.

Possible Connections To Other Subjects: This assignment can be connected to literacy, art and science.
